Subject: How much does a household cost in Canada?
  Hi, I´m new here...
Since I was little Canada was always on my mind. I remember at the age of 7 asking my mom: "why don´t we move to Canada?". Now I´m married, have two boys, 4y and 2y. That´s why I really want to be certain of almost everything...try to be...;-)
How much does a normal household (car, school, food, clothes, electricity, a visit to the doctor) cost, per month?

Maybe one last question. If we finally get a visa, how much time do we have to sel our house, and etc.

A lot of thanks for taking the time to read my questions.

Nj

p.s.: Sorry if I´ve made some grammatical mistakes, still upgrading my English;-(

What is your interpretation of a house?

House prices of course vary based on province and city so google www.mls.ca and search were your interested in living for house prices.

What is your interpretation of a car?

Public schools and health care is free in Canada.

Google away.

Where? this is a big country.

There is a huge difference in cost of living from Flin-Flon Manitoba to Vancouver BC.

you can slam Vancouver instead - we are expensive!

Roy, sod houses were ingenious for those homesteaders. Warm, dry and cheap. My grandparents lived in one too. Regina area.

cost of living Canada (in reply to: How much does a household cost in Canada?)
Well, one can generalize to the cost of living here with 2 small children. I would say that one would need a minimum of $1500-$2000 a month. Rents are high in most major cities...esp. BC and Ontario. Having a vehicle is an expense you may want to forgo...use public transit...insurance is high and the price of gas also.

cost of living (in reply to: How much does a household cost in Canada?)
knowing lots of immigrants myself, many, many live very frugally. Many share one bedroom apts with 3 or 4 people and sacrifice many "comforts" westerners see as necessities. So it really depends on the person and their level of comfort.
I know a family of 3 who lived off $1300 a month in Southern BC. It was not easy but could be done with the help of immigrant community and a survival spirit.

Westerners see as necessities? Besides a necessity, it is illegal to have 4 people living in a 1 bedroom appartment, unless you lie to your landlord. Which is still illegal.

A two bedroom appartment in Edmonton located in a questionable area is about $1200 / month including utilities except the phone. You have to keep in mind food, clothing, transportation, if there are children involved then you have to add, school, sports, etc.

Do the math, $1500 ain´t gonna cut it. By the way I am being very conservative with these numbers.
Two minimum wages together barely will make it.

You should really do a research on what city you are planning to relocate. In areas like Fort McMurray, Clagary Vancouver, Toronto, Kelowna and some others, you will find out that the cost of living is really high.

PL, do those same immigrants friends complain about how lousy their life is in Canada.

Craigslist is a good site to check rental rates.
