Subject: Need PR Card to re-enter Canada?
Does a Canadian PR need a PR Card to re-enter Canada. My cousin wants to vacation in the States this Christmas but his PR Card expired and not likely he could get it renewed before Christmas. He is driving to the States.

Thanks DocD. Is this a uniform policy or it varies from officer to officer. Do you know which part of the regulations reference to this exemption.

Come on DocD you should know better.

If your cousin does not require a US Visitor Visa the issue of how he travels is key.

If he travels by plane and citizens from his country that he holds a passport from need a Canadian Visitor Visa to travel to Canada your cousin will need a valid PR card to get on the plane from the States to Canada.

If his PR card has expired the odds are his passport that he got landed with has been expired and replaced as well.

The possession of a valid PR card elimnates the fact that the airline could be held accountable for removal costs.

Now your cousin can take all kinds of residency evidence and go to the Canadian Consulate and get a single entry return visa but that is a waste of time unless the trip was an emergency situation.

Roy,

Read the post! He is DRIVING down to the US and I can only assume that he is DRIVING back to Canada.
The word airplane has not even been mentioned here.

Get your Timmis coffee and come back.

IF he is flying back, then that is a different story.

Not fully explained. If returning to Canada from U.S. by car and not going to show PR card (because it´s expired), then based on what documentation? You have to show either alternate proof of residency (COPR, residency visa stamp, record of lsnding, etc.) or a valid passport that allows visa-free entry. Let´s be more specific and accurate.

to the last poster.
Not required, however if he has proof that he was living in Canada and has met his residency requirements then sure bring them.
A Canadian PR has a right of entry, having a valid card just helps make the trip smoother. PR status does not expire with the card.

Thanks DocD and JP. My cousin is a US citizen so going to the States is not a problem. His only concern is coming back because his PR Card expired. He did not renew it because he has an application for Citizenship. I will get him to bring his COPR and his SIN Card, hope it´s suffice.

To JP: You´re basically repeating what I said. You have to show some kind of documentation, as listed. So something is required.
