Subject: Permanent resident status expirationþ
I am a Permanent Resident of Canada. I have been out of Canada since March 2006. Since then my permanent resident card has expired, and I received my new card in August 2009.

Now I am trying to figure out when I need to go back to Canada to meet my residency obligation. I realize I need to be in Canada for 2 years every 5 years, but I am not sure if it´s from the date I got my new permanent resident card, or from the actual last 5 years.

Any info would be appreciated! thanks!

Hi there,

Check the expiry date at your PR card. Suppose it is jan. 01, 2014. Count 5 years back from that date. It becomes jan. 01, 2009. Within this span of time, you should be physically present in canada for 2 years.
