  brian,

Thank you for your answer. As I have heard from many, the socioeconomic condition in Germany is far better. About Jay, I know he has not entered into mainstream yet, he has not married yet, so is still a guest and not entitled to claim any benefit neither he can claim a job. No doubt at this stage its very difficult for nonskilled people (or those having non specific skill). Moreover, an Auslanderbehörde can be annoying at this stage.

I have seen several Canadian girls living in Cologne area working as care givers and they say they don´t want to leave Germany. Even with a small income, life is easy here. For those who don´t want to work and live on social welfare no second country exist in the world comparable to Germany, it simply pays all accomodation, utilities and extra 359 Euro pocket money per month per head. A single mother with 2 kids said in an interview, she gets 1550 Euro total support per month and can save 550 out of it! Yes, the appartments are quite cheap in downtown Berlin too.

Those who don´t like to pay heavy taxes (suppose if both partners are working, then second has to pay more than 50% tax)has distracted many Germans and they have moved out of this country. Though Germany has a highly disciplined society, it is very individualistic. A mayor´s office (Bürgeramt) is important than their own family in the mind of majority of people.

But one thing, I heard its quite easy to integrate in Canada. Big land mass, a peacefull life! I guess people in Canada are more tolerant than some people who appear in this website from time to time.
yeh, and English definitely a benefit for those like me who don´t prefer US so much. As your suggestion I will definitely think twice! Yes, I will only move if I get a job (may be I prefer Canada even if I get 80% what I earn here), otherwise will think again 5 times!

"Before people start asking why I don’t go back to germany.": No body dares to tell anyone in this globalized situation. One can sell his skill anywhere in the world. For them, better than blaming other about their feelings, I would say, accept the fact from a country like Japan or Germany. Germans say, "we are proud because after world war we developed from zero, everything on our own, we are at this stage by ourselves, and able to support our complete population." I am not admiring Germans, but what they have achieved.

Thank you again brian.

Canadians are not as tolerant as they claim to be. Come for a viksit first. However, they are not as bad as many xenophobic europeans.

compared to the US I personally see canadians quite conservative. this also includes that people stick to old principles and are not so open for new things. I guess football/soccer is a good example. canada is completely dominated by hockey and it will takes ages until this is going to change or at least that canadians will open up for other sports - if ever.

it´s also hard to tell whether canadians are more tolerant than others. it pretty much depends on where you live. if you live in major metro areas such as GTA (where most immigrants settle), I guess people are more open minded - simply because many of those people are immigrants (first or second generation). however, if you go to those areas that are more conservative and not so much culturally mixed, you will probably find it hard to get integrated. in addition, timing is everyhting. of course people tend to be more tolerant when they are employed and the economy is doing fine. at the moment I´d say many canadians would rather close the borders for immigrants.
yesterday was an article on CBC.ca on canada´s popoluation growth. If you read through the comments, you will find out that there are quite a lot people who are against imigrants/immigration...

all in all I´d say canadians are not more or less tolerant than the average europeans. but I agree with Matlatemi, the reputation is better than the reality...

so long

Brian, where do you live? Have you been anywhere near Commercial Drive in Vancouver this past month? May I suggest you don´t live in an ethnically diverse community if you say there is no sport beyond hockey.

As for tolerance, may I suggest it does not matter what country you live in, people are leary of strangers with a different culture. If the local economy is hurting and jobs are hard to come by - newcomers are rarely welcomed with open arms.

That said, I think Canada does a pretty good job of embracing people and their culture from all parts of the world. Perfectly - no. Nobody does it perfectly.

Sharon,

I live in GTA and it´s a fact that canada is fanatic about hockey - more than any other country in the world...

I´m not saying that canadians are intolerant. what I´m saying is that canadians tend to be more conservative - this is neither positive nor negative.
In one aspect you´re absolutely right: canada has done a tremendous good job in pro-actively integrating newcomers into society on a longterm basis. you can see that when comparing the performance of highschool students on a global level. European countries are far far behind. One reason for this is, that europe has been officially denying to be open for immigration and therefore has neglected to integrate newcomers (who came despite of this fact).

OK, Hockey is to Canada what Soccer is to Italy and Baseball is to America and Cricket is to India. Sport is popular based on the populations interest. May I suggest that Soccer/Football has exploded in Canada in the last 10-15 years and will only get bigger. Is it hockey or nothing? Not where I live.

"in addition, timing is everyhting. of course people tend to be more tolerant when they are employed and the economy is doing fine. at the moment I´d say many canadians would rather close the borders for immigrants." Yes brian, I agree, what I have concluded after reading many posts or articles this "timing" is a slow factor in Canada.

For hockey or football: I would not be conservative with any game. Being obsessed with a nationality ego linked with hockey probably caused many to hate football. But if one takes game is a game only, then one can feel and enjoy it differently.

Cheers,
again Argentina vs. Germany
and lucky Spain, no doubt.

Canada is economically hell, unless if you are a low class citizen from a 3rd world country. Yeah maybe they´re tolerant and friendly in front of you, but they won´t hesitate to back-stab you during job-searching.
