Hi

My family and I relocated to Canada last year 2009 after my husband and I got working visas.

I wanted to apply for a new passport at the embassy of the country where I come from as my current passport is expiring in 3 months time from now. I was surprised when I was told that I couldnīt apply for one as I had to renounce my citizenship of another country, that I donīt even have. I have now been rendered stateless and I donīt know what to do about this issue. Could someone advise how I can handle this issue.

The problem is probably that you did not explain your situation clearly enough to your own Embassy. Go back again and adress the issue clearly explaining you have no citizenship in any other Country.

All the time remebering not all government embassy staff are logical.

Becoming stateless (in reply to: Stateless Isabel)
I must agree here Isabel. Sounds as if you may have dealt with an uninformed/lazy/incompetent embassy staff member. I believe you would have been made aware if your country was revoking your citizenship. If citizenship was easily revoked, a lot more people would find themselves stranded in a foreign country.

Which country are you from?
