Subject: Becoming Canadian resident and sponsoring partner
I am a US citizen who would like to immigrate/become a Canadian resident so that I can marry and sponsor my same sex partner who is from Bulgaria. Is this possible and what kind of a time frame would this take?

My partner is currently in the US on a J-1 visa, which is about to expire. She applied to change the status of her visa to a visitor visa, we are waiting on the decision. If her application is denied, does that affect my ability to marry and sponsor her in Canada?

Begin by reading up on immigration at www.cic.gc.ca to see if you are qualified for permanent residency. Time frames vary, but it will likely take about a year from the US, after you put all your information together (that step alone took us 9 months, by the way).

I don´t think your partner´s status in the US will affect your Canadian immigration, but I would advise you to consider the implications of taking such a huge step. Canada is NOT "America-lite" as we so often think of it. Marriage should not be your only consideration, despite its obvious benefits. Also, from what I understand, sponsorship is not a simple affair and hopefully someone here can give you more information on what you´ll need in order to convince CIC of your relationship, as well as the additional time line after you receive PR.

I´m not saying this to be negative, but as a fellow American I can honestly tell you that it is quite different north of the border than you might be prepared for.

Good luck.

You have to qualify as a skill worker or any other elegible category.

If you are living in a common law relationship you may include your partner in your application.

Processing time is anywhere from 2 to 4 years if you qualify.
