Is it possible to be sponsored by an American in any situation for any type of extended residence?
Must a sponsor and/or guarantor be Canadian?

Your question doesn´t make any sense.
If you are planning to immigrate to Canada your sponsor has to be a permanent resident of Canada or a Canadian citizen.
If you are planning on moving to the US, your sponsor has to be a green card holder or an american citizen.
Last time I checked, Canada and United States were TWO separate countries.

Can an American be the sponsor/guarantor of an American immigrating to Canada under any circumstance?
Temporary Resident, Extended Visitor, anything?

US citizens don´t require a visa to VISIT Canada. If they want to immigrate, they have to apply like everyone else.
Is this american sponsor also a Canadian citizen or a Permanent resident?
If the answer is no, the answer to your question is NO.
Being an american is really cool, if you live in the US. If not....who cares?
