Subject: Getting married to Canadian
Hello, I am planning on getting married to a Canadian citizen whom I´ve met online. We have been visiting each other off and on in the past year and we are a little bit confused about the immigration process. He is not planning on getting the fiance visa to marry me, we are just going to do it when he comes visits me. And then he will return to Canada. After we get married, he is going to apply for sponsorship and then I will apply for permanent residency in Canada The questions I have are:

1. Do we need to live together for at least a year before he can be my sponsor?

2. Can I move to Canada while my application is being processed? And apply for my work permit?

1. if you are married, he can begin the sponsorship process immediately. I would urge an Outland application.

2. no, but you should be able to visit. be cautious that you don´t give any suggestion that you are moving before your application is complete.

Okay, so I have to wait for the application to be complete? So my husband and I will be apart for a year or so?

no, Outland applications are usually less than a year and there is opportunity for extended VISITS.

I´m not too sure where you´re from, but you need to be mindful of the procedures for getting married to a visitor in your home country. If you are British, your fiance will need a marriage visa (regardless of where he comes from) before you two can get married on British soil. However, if the wedding will take place in Canada, you won´t need one.

I am from the U.S. Would it be easier for us to get married in Canada? Or would I have to go back to the states after we are married?

I suppose you can get married in Canada but you need to be careful not to give the immigration officials the impression that you´re going to live in Canada on a permanent basis. I´ll advise you go into Canada as a visitor, get married and make an outland application
