Subject: Do I need to activate my PR visa if I am not ready
  Hello,
I now have the visa for permanent residence in my passport. I am planning to actually emigrate to Canada from the UK in October but will be going over to visit my wife in September for one week.

When I enter in September, will this activate my PR visa or can I enter on a tourist visa?

I am worried that I will not yet know what I will be shipping with me and so will not have the list ready and do not know quite how much money I will be bringing with me in October. Do I need to declare all of this when I go in September or can I do it in October?

I am also worried that I will not have time during my one week to sort out the rest of what I need to do to activate my visa. There are certain cards I need to obtain?

Is the emigration something that needs to be done on the first landing or can I do some of it when I come permanently the second time in October?

Any advice please?

You should be able to visit Canada without landing (also known as activating your PR visa), at least for visa-free entry. But if you´re a passport holder requiring a visa just to visit, that may complicate acquiring both a visitor´s visa whilst also holding a permanent residence visa in your passport at the same time. I would check with the consulate for guidance and the final word.

Richard is 100% correct.

Just to anwer your otehr questions; you need to appply for the PR card, no worry, it is like an automated process once you land as a PR, have to give a Canadian address so that they can mail the PR card. Without this you can´t board any commercial carrier to enter Canada, otheriwse will need consular visa if not holdign a visa waiver passport. It takes like a month to have the card in hand. You friends/relatives can mail it to you later.

Need to apply for SIN (Social Insurance No.) card. Matter of visiting the nearest office with all docs (passport...PR paper...).

These are the primary cards you need to obtain.

You can apply and get the health insurance card after 3 months of landing.

You have to fill out the proper custom forms to decalre your goods to follow list and have to endorsed by the customs at the time of your formal landing. If coming just as a visitor then no question of declaring.

Sorry to take a spcae for personal info, still think better than starting a new thread.

Richard,

How is your preparation going on? Any luck in job or not trying hard yet?

How´s the US market look like overall? Slow progress or not sure?

Hi DC, nice to hear from you and thanks for asking. With a job here and no luck there, hard to make the change at this time. But planning on proposing a remote work arrangement soon. Although I´m not sure they´ll be thrilled with the idea, especially since it´s the U.S. govt. and how sensitive thing´s have become with them along those lines. Even considering half time there and the other half here, although the complexities of that would have to be worked out.

U.S. market is getting better I think. When I was in Ontario recently, I was not encouraged to tell you the truth. This is not my usual optimistic self about Canada. People seemed to be either down and out or barely hanging on. Naturally, those well-off were there too, but seemed to be at the end of their careers or retired. I think the younger generation has a more difficult situation, as do immigrants who compete for the same professional jobs. The opinion poll I recently posted from CBC seems to back up these observations.

How´s life in GTA? Are you settled in your own place? Does it look like your position is long term?

Also apologies to Steve A for using your space to share thoughts with a fellow traveler.

Richard,

Good to hear from you. Now a days I don´t come here very often, I think it´s becoming true for all of the regular members.

I have an impression too that the US market is getting better. Though it´ll take time to be stabilized. Best news is the home market is getting normalized. Many are now thinking that the worst part it gone. Canadian IT market is struggling I hear.

Life is GTA must be heavenly compared to NY city, but coming from Austin or Orlando may be the opposite. There are some nice parks which we enjoy at the summer evenings, though looks like summer is finishing very soon, even earlier. There are lot of ethnic resturants, we are enjoying a Srilankan one that serves amazingly good varietyies of food at surprisingly cheap prices. However, ironicallty we can´t find good chinese food, though we live in Markham which is a chinese dominated area.

Worse part in GTA is the overcrowd. We can never like this. Imagine you are stuck in Traffic at the midnight, it is very likely here. Just visit Niagra in any weekend then you´ll see. The best part here now my job is well secured. The project I am working will go till next August and they are blind without me. There are many other projects we have also. High tax deduction (though I don´t mind that much) may be a little surprise. Currently I´ve to pay 19.5% Fed Tax, even considering my spouse with no income.

Canadian system is very cruel towards the younger generation and the new immigrants like you said. Without local experience it is almsot impossible to sneak into the professional market unless you are internally selected by recommendations. If you can pass this barrier by any chance then the life may be easy, which I´m feeling now professionally. I don´t care about job anymore in Canada.

I think this is due to the typical Canadian nature, they don´t like to take any risk or venture unlike the Amercians. For the same reason you may find less competition in the business world here. Only few banks, few telephone companies.....
