Subject: Moving from Sweden to Canada
  Hi!

I am wondering what the best bet would be for me, who´s born and raised in Sweden, to get together with my girlfriend, who´s born and raised in Canada. We met online a year ago, and has been visiting eachother once each so far (I am going for another visit this fall). We spend hours together on MSN every single day, and want to get together for real, living together in Canada.

From what I read so far I think the spousal sponsorship is the best (only?) way to make it happen? We´re both in our 40s, she has kids, and has been separated for almost two years, but hasn´t got her divorce finalized yet. We have decided to get married, and wonder if the best way would be to get married in Canada, and have our application for my PR visa sent from within Canada, or if we should get married there, and I go back to Sweden to apply from there? Is it common that applications from a Scandinavian residents get denied?

Not knowing where to start, it´s all quite overwhelming, and it´s tempting to hire someone to help out, but the thought of spending $$$ on something that may be easy, is not very attractive. I know there is much paperwork involved. I have downloaded most of the forms needed to fill out an application, and would really appreciate any input to what the wisest way to go would be.

Thank you very much in advance.
regards,
The Swede

Easiest way (in reply to: Moving from Sweden to Canada)
Hello,

I am No Expert, but from what I´ve read here and heard otherwise, it is quicker to sponsor when the "sponsored" (??) is outside of Canada vs when he/she is within.

Supposedly the process takes, on average, 6 months, but like I said, I´m no expert, so wait for those more knowledgeable about the system to add their .$02 (I am answering only because it seems to take some of the so-called "experts" here a loooong time to respond to one´s post *AHEM*).

Can´t see why a "Swede" wouldn´t be allowed in, barring any serious criminal convictions or the like...

Good luck! :)

Hi writerlychik!

Thanks for your response. Like I said - any input is appreciated :) The reason I asked is because it feels so bad to have to be apart for that long. But I would rather have things done the right way, than to risk anything/lessen my chances by hurrying/taking shortcuts.

I am sure the most knowledgable posters here have other businesses that needs to be taken care of as well. Many of those asking questions here seem to take getting an answer for granted, when they really should be very thankful that people spend time to make an effort to help others for free. Also, this time of year, I am sure many of us spend time doing outdoor activities instead of sitting by the computer all day. So I can wait for whatever answer I might get.

Until her divorce is finalized we can´t marry anyway. I guess we´ll have to wait for that before we can send a spousal sponsorship application?

No, no criminal activity at all :)

Thank you for your good luck wishes.
You have a good day, and a nice week!

regards,
The Swede

Hi The Swede,
My husband is in Sweden as well and I´m sponsoring him to come to Canada. However, unlike you, my husband is a permanent resident in Sweden, he is not a Swedish citizen. Like you said it is very difficult to be apart from the one that you love. My husband and I have been apart for 7 months. I think that Sponsorship is probably the best way and likely the most quickest and legal way. My husband and I got married in Sweden and when I came back to Canada I sent in the completed sponsorship application. The application will first be processed in Canada to determine whether your sponsor is qualified to sponsor you, and if your sponsor is qualified to be your sponsor, then they will send your application to London, England where they will process it and finalize it there. Once your application reaches london, the average processing times to finalize cases at the London, England office are:

2 months (30% of all cases)
4 months (50% of all cases)
6 months (70% of all cases)
8 months (80% of all cases)

Once your application is finalized then, as I´ve been told, you should receive a letter in the mail asking you to submit/mail out your passport to London so that they can put the Visa in it. Then you´re ready to go!

Unfortunately, my husband and I have been waiting for almost 7 months for his case to be finalized. His application arrived in London in January and he had an interview in March, and since his interview we haven´t heard anything. Hence, why I am Sad Girl -- Very, Very, Very Sad Girl :(

I wish you and your girlfriend all the happiness and luck in the world. And I hope you´ll like Canada as much as you like Sweden! Take Care.

Hello Sad Girl!

Thank you for your encouraging words, and the explanation on how an application is processed.

I think Canada is a wonderful country, but then I enjoy my home country, Sweden, very much too. The reason we chose Canada is mainly for her kids´ (and their dad´s) sake. Also, the language would be an issue here in Sweden.

I´m sorry to hear it has taken so long for you, and that you haven´t heard anything since March. I understand that you´re sad - it´s hurts to be apart. Is it not possible to visit eachother while the application is being processed? I´m asking that for my sake as well.

Thanks for the statistics, even though I must admit I don´t fully understand the calculation? If 30% of all cases are processed within 2 months - how can the remaining percentage (50%, 70%, 80%) exceed a total of 70%? Maybe I´m dense, but I didn´t get that :)

Good luck to you too - let´s hope they will request his passport to be handed in any time now :)

regards,
The Swede

Hi The Swede,
I got the statistics on the processing times from the Citizen and Immigration Canada Web Site

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/05-fc-spouses.asp#europe

Just like you, I don´t fully understant their calculations, but when I called the call centre they referred me to this web site for more information on the processing times.

As for seeing each other while the application is in process, the answer is yes, I know that I would be able to travel to see my husband because I have a Canadian passport and I don´t need a Visa to visit Sweden. However, my husband is only a permanent resident in Sweden, he does not have a Swedish passport, and therefore, he can not come to see me in Canada without obtaining a Visa. I know I can visit Sweden, but it´s a lot easier said than done because of work obligations and the cost of doing so. I just recently got a new job, and they´re not going to give me any time off right now, unfortunately. However, in your case, I know that your girlfriend would definately be able to visit you because she´s Canadain and she holds a Canadian passport, so there would not be an issue for her to go and visit you. As for you, I´m not 100% sure. I´m thinking that since you are a Swedish Citizen and you have visited Canada before, that maybe you can come for a visit, but you would probably want to make sure from someone that would know 100%, I don´t want to give you false hope.

I´m sure your application should go just fine once your girlfriend finalizes her divorce.

Take Care, and thank you so much; I hope you´re right and my husband will get his Visa sonetime this month.
