I was earlier DC (Departed Canadian) as I went to USA from Canada. Now I returned to Canada after some years; and according to Richard´s advice added the RC portion.

Your answer is not very staright forwrad. You have to do all of the steps eventually.

First; try to see your vehicle is admissible.

Then check whether it is upto the Canadian standard; like has day light..If not then have to modify.

Need a clearance letter from Honda stating it doesn´t have any outstanding recall.

Have to fax the vehicle title to the US custom boder post you´ll use at least 72 hrs before you cross the border.

Your tax will be decided by Caanda customs, they have a standard tax chart by vehicle model/make/year...My wild guess is it shouldn´t be more than 350 $.

thanx DC_RC :)
yea eventually i will have to go through all that and i already have an idea about what to expect. it is not very urgent as i have to land first...get my PR card...then be able to go to the US and bring the car and rest of my stuff...

one thing though, considering that my US driver´s license expired, i will have to get a Canadian one first, and after that will go to the US...the car is not under my name in the US so i will have to buy it there...so qill there any problem buying the car (for like 1$) with a Canadian license and then import it?

Are you planning have the Canadian DL from the scratch instead of exchanging the US one? That is not very easy like the US one.

In order to exchange the US one I´m not sure whether you can use the expired one.

I don´t see any problem buying with Canadian license though. Most likely as a first time landed immigrant you don´t have to pay any tax, but you have to fill up the proper form with the VIN no. and other info of the car you´ll import later.

i looked at the website for the motor vehicles in canada and yes it´s very very difficult and a long process...i don´t understand why is it soooo long to get a license..pass and wait and pass an wait..especially that i´m not under 25 years old.
anyway i have a relative there and he called the quebec office and the person told him that i should just bring a driver´s record and i should be able to get a canadian license....i hope this is it. otherwise it is frankly ridiculous to go trhough all those steps.

anyways i´m gonna wait and see..till i land and go there myself and see how i can get a canadian license. if it´s not the way i expect it to be, i might just go back to the states and renew the license there...

Better to take the renewed license on the 1st place.

All countries have different policies. Yes, Canadian DL process is a tiring & expensive one; I am glad that I didn´t have to go through that. I know some folks who with US license failed multiple times in the road test. Anything related with auto is expensive in Canada. Be prepare for the high insurance as well. It should be at least 3 times more than the US, Quebec may have little better.

it´s starting to sound a bit scary really
i have to go to Canada first before going to the states again. once i´m there i will figure out what´s best to do.
i´m not worried about taking the road test, i´m just worried about the wait time that could be months if not 2 years to finally be able to drive like anywone else...

and as a matter of fact i will be living in quebec so i hope that will help.
why is everything related to automobiles so expensive and complicated in Canada???

High Tax.

In the USA you most likely buy imported Canadian gas for your car, cheaper than the Canadians buy in their own land.
