Subject: Is valid US important to land in Canada by Car
I will be landing in Canada next month (driving from Chicago to Toronto). Will the Canadian officers be concerned about your US status? Do the officers ask for our I-95 card? I can´t find mine. Would this raise a red flag? Please can you share advice or past experiences about currently out of status in the US landing in Canada by car. I see forums with people in this situation but they never write back to advice others. Please if you have gone through this, is it time to give back. Also if you are exporting your car and drive to the US customs to fill the proper paper work, would they ask or be concerned about your US status? Will they ask about your passport? Will the US customs office be after the point of no return (meaning you have to go through US immigration to get back into the US)? Thanks.

Canadian officers won´t care about your US out of status. I-94 card surrender is upto you. They wo´t ask or force you. It is upto you.

I am not quite sure about visiting the US customs. However, I do know that people in the past didn´t even visit the US custom office, they just faxed the title before and drove straight to the Canadian post without any issue.

I have to admit this has me stumped. I thought the U.S. required all U.S. registered motor vehicles to be exported first, before they could be imported to another country such as Canada. But I couldn´t find any such regulation in searches at U.S. Customs and State Department websites. As a matter of fact, a few people reported just driving their cars straight through to the Canadian side and importing there.

So I guess my point is why bother with sending the car´s title to U.S. Customs at all, since the purpose of doing that is to give them time to prepare paperwork for the car´s export.

Thanks for the correction, yep I meant I-94. I guess I will just be faxing my title and driving through. This will make my drive less confusing.

Please others with personal experiences can you also advice about exporting your car or canadian officers showing any concerns about US status.

Thanks DC_RC and Richard. I agree with your guys just gathering info from others.

Richard,

I know many incidents where people just drove their car to Canada, just faxed the title before. None haave had any issue at all. One even returnd to the USA after 2 years with the same car.

However, I would visit the US port just to obey the law/regulations. I am not out of status and ingrate, want to obey 100% the rules of the country who contributed greatly building my life.

I agree with you, dc_rc. To be safe, I would do the U.S. export process too. But I´m amazed Canada doesn´t check or care that this has not been done with cars coming in for import from the U.S.

By the way, I hope you´ve settled there with your friend ok, and eventually find a suitable place in GTA. We liked Guelph, but I think the commute to downtown is just a bit too far. So I think for us it would be Brampton, Markham, or Mississagua (I can never remember the spelling).

As a matter of fact, Richard, I even didn´t know that officially there is any rule like that. My guess is, this is among several rules which the authorities don´t care much.

If I have to work in the Toronto proper then I wouldn´t live in Guelph, though it is a better area to stay. But too long commute time is something I hate. If you don´t find a job yet or looking then probably it´s a good idea to stay in the downtown area (near any subway station). Only from there you can manage to commute any part in the GTA easily. Once you get the job, then move to that proximity.

Brampton area is good, expecially there are new areas developed in the North Brampton relatively cheaper but very quite and nice. Markham is probably the best option (considering relatively closer to the down town), but expensive than Brampton or Missisauga. I am looking a place for us there. Looks like 1 bed apt. at least 1000, where near the downtown it can be as low as 800$. Only good thing here is the water/power bill is inclusive.

Richard: If you are looking into Mississauga you might check out the Port Credit area. We researched that neighborhood a bit when we thought about locating to Toronto and it looked very appealing. It seems more neighborhood-y and interesting than the endless tract homes of much of the rest of the suburb. Not sure if it´s well connected with transit, but it is relatively close into the city.

Glad to hear you are getting settled DC. I hope your job is working out well for you and that you are glad to be back in Canada.

On the exporting issue, I was under the impression that you must legally export your car. I suppose if you still owe on your car you would be considered to have stolen it by taking it into another country. US authorities rightfully have an interest in where citizens, residents and their stuff are located (Canada requires the same). I´m sure the exporting process protects creditors as well as assures that the property hasn´t been stolen or has otherwise been taken across international boundaries unauthorized. Think of all the situations that the government is protecting. I´d hate to take a chance on it.
