Subject: Brining car to Canada - where to fax title to US C
Pls. help - can´t find a fax # for US Customs to fax my car title and I am permanently moving to Canada in 3 days.
As I understand need to fax car titles to US Customs 72 hours before moving - I can see details for Canada side on their website but nothing for US Side.

Anyone recently do this - what´s the actual process
As I understand
1. Take car to US Customs - show title
2. Go to Canada side - fill form for import - pay duty+tax

Can someone elaborate on what you actually did and how long this whole process took. Any issues you faced! Did you need /show any other papers!
Thanks

You need to FAX your car title to the U.S. Customs office at the border crossing where you intend to export your car, at least 72 hours in advance. Each U.S. Customs office post have their own FAX number, so search the internet for the U.S. Customs web site to locate the office FAX number you need.

You have to have other documentation if you then want to import the car to Canada, too numerous to describe right now.

Richard,

Hope you´ll read this.

Do we have to physically visit the US customs office before proceeding to the Canadian post or just faxing is fine?

One of my freind took a car 3 months back, he just faxed the title, but didn´t visit the US post.

It is a simple process but you must follow all the instructions exactly. Read up at www.riv.ca for importing information and at the US customs site for exporting information. You are almost out of time now for faxing your title if you want to land in 3 days, so read the instructions carefully. You must have all your proper documentation in hand, including your goods to follow list (which you´ll have with you when you land anyway).

If done correctly and you´ve done your research before hand, you shouldn´t have to pay taxes on your vehicle (as long as you´ve owned it for at least one year prior, which you will have to prove). You will be charged around $200 per car for importation purposes, but that covers your Canadian Tire inspections (although not any work they might have to do to bring your car up to standards such as daytime running lights, if you need any work done).

Good luck.

DC_RC,
Yes, wannabe is absolutely correct. www.riv.com has all the details on importing a car from the U.S. to Canada.

But to export from the U.S. first, a copy of the car´s title should be mailed or FAXed to the U.S. Customs office at the border where the car is to be exported 72 hours before physical arrival at that U.S. Customs office. You do have to physically go into the U.S. Customs office and complete the paperwork at any one of the windows there. You´ll need to mention that the copy of the car title was mailed or FAXed in advance, and they´ll retrieve it from the computer database.

I don´t know how your friend could have exported a U.S. registered car without completing the export paperwork physically at the U.S. Customs office. One of the main reasons for in person export processing is to prevent auto smuggling across the border.

I would add that on the Canadian side for import, one shouldn´t have to pay taxes, but only if the car is on the GOODS or GOODS-TO-FOLLOW list. Otherwise hefty taxes will be due.

Thanks Richard and Wannabe,

Yes, my freind did fax the title but didn´t stop at the US border post. He just drive to the Canadian post directly. Caandians didn´t ask anything about the US clearance. But, I don´t see any reason not to follow the due laws. Especially when I am not in the criminal data base.
