Subject: working without work permit
I´m an international student in Winnipeg. Last weekend, Canadian Immigration officer told me that I work illegally. Because I deliver paper for Free Press.

I know I don´t have work permit. But I never know delivering paper is illegal, because I´m not a employee, but an independent contractor. When I applied this job,no one asked me to show work permit and SIN.

Now,I´m scheduled to an interview with Canada Border Service Agency. I´m afraid that I will be deported. Since I have been to Canada, I always a full time student. I don´t want do anything illegally.

Do you get paid for delivering the papers? If yes, and you don´t have a SIN and a work permit, you are working illegally.

Stop delivering papers. As a student, you are here in Canada to study ~ this means you should not be collecting a paycheque from anyone.

Well, that may sound ok when you purchase goods. When you use the public transit, parks and any other government provided facilities who pays for that? Other tax payers!

There might be ways to work without workpermit and bypass taxes but that does not make it right. Illegal does not mean crime, it means not following the laid out law.

Okay guys something about this posting seems so BOGUS!

How would an Immigration Officer walk up to some young guy delivering Newspapers and say R U a Student? Do you have a work permit?

How did a Immigration Officer know Lee was delivering Newspapers? WORSE THEY "TOLD" HIM ON A (WEEKEND)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we all know how fast CIC works.

WOW last weekend they told him and he is already scheduled for an (INTERVIEW)!!!! Why do I not believe this????

CBSA is hunting down paper boys?

Toronto has thousands of undocumented workers in the Construction field.
Toronto has thousands of undocumented workers in the cleaning Industry.
Toronto has thousands of undocumented workers in the Restaurant Business.

Yet CBSA does not go after them because as soon as they call them in for an interview these un-authorized or un-documented works say "REFUGEE PROTECTION" even if they have been on a student Visa for five years.

Then they get a work permit and a student permit total cost $275.00 per year.

tell them that you are just trying to help the community.

not do it for money.

and THIS """" When you use the public transit, parks and any other government provided facilities"""stuff is bullshit.

So you want all visitors in Canada pay your ur government provided facilities??

I am an international student, I pay 2100/course while my canadian classmates pay like 300. I think we have paid enough for your "government provided facilities"

Univesities are not government provided facilities.
Hence the reason we pay for school.

I think what Nathan meant is the ones that are paid for by taxpayers in Canada so Canadians and LEGITIMATE travellers can use them.

who told u that universities r not government provided facilities???

so you think it is not a public facilitie because you paid for it??

who told you that we cannot use public facilities because we didn´t pay tax for them?

who told you international students do not pay tax??

LOGIC is important!!

Hey all.,
I read the entire post and it seems that people take things in a wrong path which should not be.

1. The international student who delivered papers is not suppose to do it as per CIC. If a person is willing to work putting him on a risky situation, then the student has to face it.
Its also the employer´s decision which is wrong / illegal. Just to make few more bucks as commision, some agents hire international students in Canada and when problem arises, they fail to reveal their identity to CBSA / CRA / CIC / IC and they simply escape.

Solution: The student has to abide CIC officers final decision., If you are ordered to leave canada within 60 days, PLEASE LEAVE, else you will be ARRESTED and taken back to your country, wherein you will fall under INTERNATIONAL LAW VIOLATIONS.
If you agree and leave Canada, its good for you. If you still feel that you have not much mistakes on your part, you can take it internationally. There are provisions to sue your previous employer / CIC (CIC - that´s impossible). I repeat - THERE ARE PROVISIONS TO ARGUEE / FILE PETITION, but you have obey whatever CIC says.

Paying Taxes and Using services - Public transit is not free - you pay a fee for it. and everything is priced PLUS tax except a few amenities.

I fully agree that International students pay more than Canadians and I wonder why!!!.
The worse part it filing taxes and getting back your returns, I have seen cases wherein International Students are not able file their taxes as they dont have a SIN till they complete studies, and after you get a SIN; H&R block or lawyers say that the student is not elligible to get taxes back!!!!....,

~~~thanks for reading guys~~~
