Subject: Finding a job without work permit in Calgary
I have applied for PR in Canada and I´m waiting now more than two years to get it. My application is in advanced stage but I cannot wait any longer to move to Calgary. I would have my interview in Calgary.
Does anybody know whether it is possible for me to come to Calgary as a tourist and to find a job without a work permit?
Also, I have studied Education and Sociology. Is it easy to find a job in this fields or do I have to work in the customer service?

Thanks for any honest answers.

You could come, but you won´t be able to work. Every employer requests a SIN number in order to be able to complete paperwork for you. Only way you can get a SIN is to be a PR, Citizen or have a work permit.

Given the current climate, I highly doubt you will be able to get a work permit or have a company willing to undergo the expense of getting a LMO to apply for the work permit.

You are going to need to stick it out.

Thanks Carrie and Stavrimacoku for your prompt answers.

I know that finding a good job in Calgary without work permit can be very tough or even impossible. Since Calgary is an oil city, I can imagine that there are less jobs in academic and social fields anyway.
Therefore I would be ready to work even in not desirable fields like dishwasher for the beginning.

But if I find a good job in my field in Calgary, while I would work as for example dishwasher in Calgary, is it possible for the employer to apply for the work permit for me? And how long would take the application process?

Does anybody know an answer? Thanks in advance.

Cherry,

You are NOT going to be able to obtain a work permit as dishwasher within Canada period.

In order to apply for a work permit there two things that has to happen.

1- Your employer has to prove that there are no Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents available to fill that position.

2- You have to apply for a work permit outside of Canada.

Working without a work permit if you are not a Canadian citizen or a PR is ILLEGAL.

If you are going to move to a new country and start a new life start with the right foot.

You are setting your self for a failure.

Cheers,

Bill

that would be illegal. being illegal will bite you back later on... i´ve been waiting for 2 and a half years, and I prefer waiting than being illegal in Canada...
