Can anyone advise on the best State primary and secondary schools in either the Peterborough or Belleville areas, including places like Coburg, Lindsay and Port Hope. Thanks!

Best PUBLIC & PRIVATE schools!

All schools have standardized testing in Ontario and they are all rated.

Start your search by understanding we do not have STATES in Canada.

Google schools ratings Ontario http://www.fraserinstitute.org/reportcards/schoolperformance/ontario.htm You will also find there are some ingenious ways to get your kids into a neighboring district with transportation.

apologies - by state I meant public - uk terminology hard to shake off - we don´t have states either but they are known as state schools - our public are private etc etc . I hope though that someone might understand what I am trying to ask. Have seen the league tables but I am more interested in anecdotal evidence.

I am not in Ontario and so I can´t answer your question, but I will volunteer my experience. When I inquired about schools, both online and in person after moving, I was told time and time again that there is no difference between one school and the next, that they all have to live up to the same standards and are all rated equally. Of course, after arriving in Canada, I quickly realized this is completely false; schools here are as individual as in the States, some failing miserably and some offering appropriate instruction. Lucky for us, we were steered to the best district in our province, although admittedly the standards are far below our expectations.

Again, I am not in Ontario so the situation is different, but I would suggest that you don´t put to much stock in the idea that "all" schools and school systems are equal and excellent.

You are wise to do your research and I hope it pays off.

Wannabe you make me smile.

You are in laid back country were no one accepts a new comer of two generations questioning (their) school system. Even if you have valid and logical concerns.

Tony it is not so much the school that really makes the difference because that curriculum is totally controlled by the province but the individual teacher that shines above all the rest.

Everyone has had that one teacher that was so super we will always remember him/her.

In Ontario the schools are all rated due to standardized testing. I´m not sure but I think they do not do this in NS or NB where ever you are.

This individual is in farming country and thinks he/she can get their kids in any school for miles/km´s around, NOT SO!

My sons school is rated much higher then the other school twelve blocks away. Teachers come and go and right now my son has connected with a Teacher who explains how to get a higher marks and makes a game of his students to get the best marks possible.

Last year his teacher got married soon after school started and the four weeks after marriage things went really downhill in the classroom. Why, unknown.

I suggest that check out the schools in your (immediate area), Catholic/Private and Public but the distance between Bellville, Lindsay and Cobourg is HUGE. There would be no bus that would have a kid on the bus for more then four hours so bring your search down to a place you expect to reside.

Break it down to two or three schools check out their Provincial scores and then speak to the Teachers, Teachers make all the difference that anyone can personally control.

Wish you the best.
