Subject: Health Insurance
I am moving to Vancouver in the new year and am unsure as to how to go about arranging health insurance and the provincial healthcare doesn´t kick in for three months. Conventional travel insurance states that you must return to country of origine which I obviously won´t be. Any ideas?

I think there have been a number of previous postings describing temporary health insurance available in Canada. I´m sure you can search the internet or others here can provide those company names.

But quite honestly, unless you´re now ill needing continuous medical care and attention, I don´t think 3 months wait is worth worrying about. There are 50 million or so in the U.S. and much of the world living all their lives without guaranteed health care coverage. Other than an accident, not much would change in 3 months anyway. I don´t think this is unsympathetic, just common sense.

I would suggest getting temporary insurance. Look into Blue Cross or similar services--they are very affordable if nothing else, having coverage gives you peace of mind. You do not have to be traveling to get coverage; simply explain your situation. They are very aware of the three month waiting rule.

We got Blue Cross insurance for our family of three for somewhere between $100- $200 a month. A few weeks after we moved, our young son came down with an ear infection and I took him to a clinic. The bill was over $550. I paid out of pocket, but will be reimbursed by the insurance company, thank goodness. I can´t imagine what we would do if we were hospitalized or worse and had no coverage.

With all due respect to Richard, I do suggest looking into temporary insurance. It is easy to get and extremely inexpensive. Potentially enormous health bills would not be a good way to start your new life.

You make a valid point, wannabe. To be on the safe side, temporary insurance would give peace of mind and reduce risk. Your recent family experience makes the case.

If you are going to BC, take a look at BCAA. They offer 3 months for those who move to the province and are waiting for MSP to kick in.

You will have a three month waiting period before you are covered by the provincial coverage(MSP) after you land Canada. So you should get three months period policy.

You can get the with different deductibles and choose the best option suits your need.
