Entering canada, when should I apply for a TRP?

Subject: Entering canada, when should I apply for a TRP?
  I have a criminal past mainly from the 70´s and headed to canada at the end of October Should I go to a Service Port or Port of Entry and would you advise I go several weeks before my trip or just give myself ample time on my way there? I live in Washington State.
