Subject: doom and gloom part 3
Roy, I accept full responsibility for starting this thread. If I did not care what happened to people I would not have said anything.

My intention is not to scare or discourage people it is to encourage them to be careful. Different sectors of the economy will feel the pinch at different points in time. Different sectors will fill the impact at different degrees. Different parts of the country will feel it worse than other parts.

I am done with my caution flag. We will discuss again in 6 months and you can decide if I was fear mongering or correct in my cautions. For everyone´s sake... I would be very pleased to be wrong.

DC is right some times and preobably more then I wish to ever admit. I do not wish to imply that everything is perfect with the future but I want to look at things more positive then negative due to my personal circumstances.

Everyone interprets everything through their eyes and own personal circumstances. Some certain areas of the Canadian economy will suffer due to the sub prime mess that the current US government allowed to happen but I believe others will benifit.

The Democrats don´t seem to be doing that well Richard!!! That could be a reason for real Doom and Gloom in Canada!

Folks, I have a very negative neighbor that thinks everything is bad from snow removal, crime, noise, women who wear perfume while walking down the street etc. etc. She hates this and hates that and wants everyone else in the community to start a war on this and that. Funny thing is she just moved in a year and a half ago. She attracts bad things to her seriously. We never had pigeons in the neighborhood and now they sit on the edge of her roof and leave their droppings on her front window.

A very rich shipping magnate said when you have knowledge that others do not you must consider it a business opportunity. How many RICH GUYS made tons of money by betting certain stocks would go down? How many RICH GUYS made tons of money by betting certain stocks would go up?

Too many think you can only make money if you have money. Think of the price of certain condos with a marina that are now available in Miami for 1/4 the price they were selling for two years ago. The list goes on for ever. Creating a better life for oneself does not always depend on a regular paycheck.

I live near where GM makes a huge amount of cars and trucks. The plant was the best producer GM had and now they are closing it and moving it to Mexico. People in the States stopped buying pick up trucks due to this sub prime mess.

Was that a wise decision? No not if the work force they had was the best they had. How many great decisions has GM made in the last decade? They introduced the Volt (there new electric car) in Toronto this week but it will not be sold for three or four years. How on earth will that turn GM around they might not be a company by the time they start selling the Volt.

Since many Americans will now have to commute further because they have had to sell their city house or go under the Volt is a real option to help them commute. But.......

Things will change and some will suffer badly and others will see this mess that the world is in as an opportunity. How about that car in India that runs on compressed air.

Maybe we can really start a green economy on this side of the Atlantic. No Sharon I´m not voting for Dion!

We can do better, we must!

See you in six months Sharon.

I 100% agree with you. You know me well enough to realize I don´t write these kinds of posts often or take the lightly. I am a lemonade type girl.

GM is a great example of conditions on the ground that affect more than just GM. Those laid off workers need to eat and they need to pay the rent. so, they go somewhere else to work and the competition for that other job just increased. The mill workers that aren´t exporting lumber that were laid off are in the same boat. They need a job. Neither of them will be buying a new house any time soon so those construction workers will likely be finishing up the last of the projects they are working on and they too will be needing to pay for food and rent.

If they are not building houses, or cars, or cutting trees... the unemployment rate is going to creep up, the amount of money floating around is going to dry up... it does not take much.

How long will it take to get things back to the way they were... cycles vary.

So... CIC applicant that has been hearing that Alberta is screaming for workers assumes that situation will remain that way indefinitely. It will appear to continue for probably another 6 months while reality starts to hit.

(By the way- I am not convinced that DC is in any better shape where he is in Florida. Only time will tell if his north/south decision was ultimately the best one.)

CIC takes sooo long that you make a decision based on current conditions but you rarely get to live those current conditions because you are waiting and waiting and waiting. As EVERYONE is suggesting... things are slowing down. If you applied in 2006 with certain assumptions you are going to find a different north american economy in 2009 in which to make your future.

I am NOT suggesting it is impossible but given some of the posts we get here, I think there is sometimes a perception that jobs come easily and success is not far off. 2009 will be harder than 2006 and that is a fact.

Yes Roy, we can do better. We have to do better. This problem is beyond Dion or Harper. All they can do is help us ride it out.

I was listening to Donald Trump on Larry King last night. He suggests if you have money, to start looking for real estate that you can buy back from the banks. Probably good advice if you are sitting on lots of cash. I am not convinced most of us here have that kind of cash lying around.

Most of us here are trying to pay the rent, just like the guys at GM or at the lumber mill or the software developer.

Even in my own situation. I have a good job but the success of my organization is very much tied to what the economy is doing. In the last 30 days my industry has showed marked declines that will not even show up yet in the government stats. My employment contract is up March 31. I am far less confident this week that it is an automatic renewal or that I will get that cost of living increase.

I am not afraid, and I am not wringing my hands at night. I am looking forward with some awareness that I need to really watch the situation to insure I come out the other end unscathed. I can´t carry on like I have a job for life - that really would not be very smart.

So, for those of you that are reading this... again I say the economics of north america are in serious flux. Everything may be just fine for your particular situation - that would be fabulous news BUT please, for your own protection... be sure you have very current information about economic conditions in the industry of your choice, the city of your choice so you can assess your risks and optimize your opportunities.

see you in 6 months.
