Subject: Canada_Study_Workpermit_PR
  Hello everybody!

I´m from India and i have done my Masters in Social Work (MSW) and have 2 years of relevant experience. I intend to go for studies in Canada for the Winter 2009 intake. And the course I would be applying for would be a Full time 10 months accelerated diploma program (either Social Service Worker program or Development Service Worker program)in Ontario.
And here, can anybody let me know after the completion of studies will i be eligible for Post Graduate Work Permit program and if so for how long?

I have got one more query.
I just heard that as i have done my Masters (MSW) and as has 2 years experience; i can apply for the PR on the day i land in Canada and that by the time i finish the course and (if i get) the work permit duration completed i will get my PR. Is this can be true?

Please let me know the possibilities.

Post graduate work permit depends on the institution you graduate from and the duration of degree you graduate with. In your case, if you are eligible you will get a one year post graduate work permit which will not be tied to an employer and you will not be required to work in an area related to your course of study. You should check post graduate work permit issue with the institution.

You can apply for PR from the country of your citizenship and the country where you have been legally admitted for atleast one year and are currently residing there.

If you get temporary resident visa and study permit for one year duration you can apply for PR the day you land in Canada and establish residence (you need an address). However, better would be if you apply after one month or so.

Make sure you meet the point and minimum requirements.

Mariam,

I have done my research as i was wearing your shoes sometime back....
The answer to your first question is that you can apply for the Post Graduate work permit within 90 days of completing your MSW. Make sure that you have the transcripts. However, you cannot really apply until and unless you have a job offer from some employer. Now there is a twist in the story and that is that the work that you find should be related to your field of study that is MSW. Another thing is that your Post Graduate work permit will only be a 10 month permit.
Answer to your second question is that you need to complete a an online test on the CIC test and check whether you are eligible to file for immigration. You need to score 67 points or more to be eligible to file for immigration. I am not certain whether you can apply as soon as you land in canada on a student permit....but i know that when you have to apply for Immigration ou have o do it outside of the contry...for example New York.
There is tons of information and procedures that you need to read off the CIC website...this will clear your doubts.

Cheers

Mayank,

The rules have changed. Now you can apply for post graduate work permit as soon as you finish the course (with in 90 days). You do not need a job offer and the work need not be related to your job. Also, if your course is of more than two years duration, you are eligible for three year work permit. For courses of less than two years duration the work permit is usually of the same duration as the length of the course.
