Subject: !!! Urgent - I am in trouble - welfare ???
I am a new skilled immigrant, I came to toronto in dec 2007, and i struggled to find a job, I came with $ 10K , it took me some time to settle and adjust before i started looking for work, then in Jan i started looking for work and I could not find any, i made lots of application for 3 months and also got a PT job at retail store, then i met someone and invested in home based business and lost all money

Now I am in financial trouble and because of stress and depression , I got fired from my PT retail job, I am afraid of being homeless next month,

Can a skilled worker go on Ontario works welfare scheme to meet living expense, what are the laws regarding this, does it affect citizenship application in future, I have completed my 7 months in Canada, Urgent guidance required

settlement funds should have supplimented at least 6 months of living expenses until stable employment was found. Instead it was spent on a bad investment. It has nothing to do with immigration.

as for wefare eligibility... you likely qualify for welfare but if you actually believe it is enough money to live on, you are in for a big shock.

You are eligible for welfare, and like Sharon said, the amount will be something that can only prevent you from hunger. Don´t expect anything more.

Have you considered moving to Alberta? I keep hearing you can get a job quickly and pays good money (of course, I am not sure). At least, would help you land back on your feet.

I still cannot believe that someone can´t find a job in Toronto for 7 months. What is wrong in this picture?

Alberta, yeah good job opportunities out there but you have to go and find them, they will not find you (in most cases).
"Success is a journey, not a destination."

You are elegible for welfare, but I won´t hold my breath on that one. The amount of money I don´t think is the greatest.

Cheers

sounds like our friend thought there was an easy way to get a job - buy one. Lesson for everyone. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Anonymous, you best start getting serious about looking for a job. You came to Canada with skills - you better put them to use.

Survival jobs should be easy enough to come by. On a recent trip to TO, I saw more than enough Help Wanted signs in shop windows. The Second Cup on the waterfront (around Yonge or Bay) is hiring, as were tons of other stores all over the city. It might not be exactly what you want, but I imagine it will pay more than welfare, plus you´ll be gaining that ever-valuable Canadian experience.

As I hear very few native-Canadian accents on the streets and in the shops of Toronto, I don´t for a second believe that being a newcomer hurts your chances for employment. Take a survival job and keep trying for whatever it is you´re qualified for; you never know what might turn up, and at least you´ll be standing on your own two feet.

Well, it is difficult to get a job however, not that difficult to find a job to make living. There are hundreds of jobs offering 10-14 dollars an hour. You must contact with different agencies like woodgreen,YMCA, VPI, PCPC for employment assiatnce. they would also guide you for social assistance if this is an urgent need. Contact with www.appleone.ca, Kelley Services, manpower. these agencies provide temporary work without any trouble. Secondly, one thing in Toronto is 100 % guarnteed that is telemarketing job, i bet if you can speak well then you can get a job for 10-12 dollars an hour in one day with hundreds of telemarketing companies. Now adays, job market is a bit down because of summer and employers prefer to hire those students out of school but still, telemarketing and jobs with factories through employment agencies and employment assistance programs is out there. Alberta is a good choice however, you need a little bit of money to go and stay there before you get a job. Or get a temporary job in Toronto and keep applying for jobs in Alberta. No doubt, Alberta has many jobs. Good Luck!

Folks the issue here is why the posting as Bill implied. Something is unusual here.

Well welfare is an option but not intended as a long term option but you will get approximately $500.00 per month. That will not cover rent so the first thing to do is look in the mirror.

Why would you do this "then i met someone and invested in home based business and lost all money" knowing you had no income why invest in a pie in the sky scheme? What really gets me is that there are 400,000 to 600,000 undocumented workers in Canada and you can´t find employment!

Whoops you did find employment because "I got fired from my PT retail job" and do not get me wrong there is nothing wrong with retail jobs but being a flag person (stop - slow sign) on a construction crew would probably give you more money.

Look in the mirror and stop focusing on handouts, your educated, you have skills and a brain so use it and swallow your pride get off the couch and get a job today.

To get a welfare is not a solution, you must have to go out to find something and if you are really want to find a job then there wont be any problem.

As of now I am depressed and I need some time to get myself in shape and some money to live , so I am planning to go on welfare.

I know people doing all kinds of jobs in toronto, survival jobs, and they keep doing that all their life, welcome to canada,
I have lost money but not hope and self respect, If going on welfare gives me time and opportunity to get on my feet again, i will do it, there are millions here who milk the govt and don´t work, I am in genuine need, so i feel nothing wrong on going on welfare
