try this...

Sunny Newcomer Service was founded in 1998 by a group of landed immigrants. We have over 9 year experience in helping landed newcomers settle in Toronto. Before you come to Canada, it is important for you to know about the education system, health system, labor market and housing. In addition to the above, we also provide pickup service and arrange accommodation for the clients. We also help newcomers to get the necessary documents such as PR card, SIN card, OHIP card and Driver License.
If you would like more information about how to start a new life in Canada, please check our web: http://www.sunnynewcomer.com

Other than what Sharon said;

Try to communicate with your community. You may find them from your mosque, or grocerry stoes. Initially it would be better to share with someone if you are alone. That´ll save money for you and also you will get good help to understand the new country & system.

Try to stay near the subway stations for easy transportation. If you are from India/PK then you may find your big communities in the Scarborough area, or Danforth/Victoria park area if decide to stay in Toronto area.

For job searching; go to the free seminars/workshops by the local HRDC...YMCA to learn the basic technics, you can find also some reading/vdo/audio materials there too.
