Subject: What is real job situation in Calgary
I have read a lot that getting a job , atleast a survival job is very easy and fast in calgary , how true is this? , I know in Toronto even geting a survival jobs is competitive and takes time

I have seen many new immigrants in toronto unemployed for 3-6 months, or just doing some min wage PT jobs and make like $600 a month

Please give me some real info on Calgary, i know getting a professional job is difficult everywhere in Canada, I want to know about other jobs in service sector ,retail, travel, manufacturing etc

Also I have heard that kids working at Tim Hortons and McDonalds etc get paid like $ 16 per hr , how true is all this

So you appear to be residing in the Greater Toronto Area and you have no friends who know anything about Calgary? Google the Federal Government Job Bank and compare salaries yourself.

No matter what the response you would have gotten I see a negative comment coming back from you regarding employment in Calgary so google away.

look at CBV´s posts. She has been in Calgary for less than 3 months. Most landed immigrants leave this forum and never come back. Your range of information will be small. You may just have to take the leap.

I have been in Calgary for nearly 2 months and let me tell you ONE THING that we both notice here.

THEY ARE HUNGRY FOR WORKERS. And yes I am talking about survival job. My husband got one after 10 days of arrival, I am not joking. It is EASY.

Then he changed for a better one but we make enough money to pay rent and bills and we have a child to take care. We can live here with just enough to get by. As a starting point, we are happy though I am hoping to find a job myself soon so we can start living more comfortably.

So yes according to what I see here and our experience so far, getting a ´survival job´ in Calgary is easy. We find the minimum salary is $10/h without tax.

From what I heard from other people and other immigrants that I met recently, it seems that the whole Alberta is like that. So why not make a move here and see for yourself ?

Getting a job in calgary is not difficult, and you can easily make more then minimum wage in most places, including fast food joints. That being said, the quality of life here is not that great. There is not much to do, and the weather sucks.

I think the above comments about the pros and cons of Calgary and Alberta make a good point about choosing where to live in Canada.

Jobs are always going to be at or near the top of the list, no doubt. But not everyone has the same quality of life values. For some, a good job in an environment of plentiful jobs is enough. For others, in addition to jobs, they´re also looking for diversity, cultural events, intellectual activities, bike paths, recreation, etc.

Agreed that some of the Alberta towns may be great in that they´re hungry for workers, but then that´s about it other than a few strip shopping malls for the basics. I´m not saying Calgary is like that (never having been there), but some areas where the most workers are needed tend satisfy basic blue collar needs and that´s it.

So what I´m saying is one has to balance a great jobs area with other qualities of life depending on personal preferences, in deciding if you´ll be happy there. At least that´s my perspective.

Richard, you know that Maslow hierchy of needs pyramid they used to teach in school? We have to get through the bottom layers before we can work our way up to the intrinsically valuable stuff.

Speaking of bike paths - Richmond has the most amazing dike that allows you to walk endlessly along the ocean and river ending up in Steveston for a fabulous cup of coffee. After that, you can go watch the dragon boat races in False Creek, and then head to jazz festival. all on the same Saturday :)

now that is waaaay up the pyramid.

Jobs are pretty easy to get but finding a place to live for a reasonable price isn´t so easy.
