I´m currently working in the U.S. on a work visa and plan to marry my American boyfriend of 3 years in the next few months. This is my plan, I want to move back to Canada and bring him with me once we´re married. I´ve been looking on the immigration website and it looks like I can only sponsor my husband if I currently live in Canada. Is that true?

NO.
If you are a citizen then sponsor your spouse staying outside of Canada. Just have to give consent that after he gets the permanant staus you´ll settle in Canada.
