Subject: Question about passport.
I have been reading the various forums and I keep reading that applicants receive their passports back at the end of the process. What if the applicant does not have a passport? Traveling back and forth by land across the US and Canada border has not required a passport so far. Is a passport mandatory before applying?

I´ve crossed that border about 12 times in the last year (the last time a month ago) and do not have a passport. I take my ID with me when I go and have never been questioned. I have dual citizenship and take that paperwork also. I had put off getting a passport for myself because I needed my paperwork for crossings, which were frequent. I was asking for my fiance who is the one that will be the applicant. He is a US citizen. I guess he better get on that if it´s mandatory. Thanks.

birth certificate is acceptable when going from the US to Canada. Going from Canada to the US, passport is required. They are being leanient for people driving through but that courtesy will be ending shortly.

Bite the bullet and get your passport.

CIC will not touch your application without it.

passport renewal (in reply to: Question about passport.)
my boyfriend and i are planning to travel to thailand before the end of April, for our visa application our passports need to be valid for another 6 months. My passport is fine. My boyfriends expires on October 20 2008. Does he need to renew his passport before we leave? If so what is the easiest and quickest way to do this?
Thank you for you help

you will not get a visa that will extend past the expiry of your visa. I would advise you to renew your passport. It can be done on a rush basis (it will cost you)

I am assuming he is Canadian?
