Subject: Will my degree be recognized?
Ive posted a couple of times and so far i have recived some good feedback and i figure why not ask some more :)

browsing trough the net i found out that many immigrants to canada have a super hard time accomodating to the country, their education is ofter over looked and opportunities for them are limited. this has to do (according to what i have read) with Canadians not trusting the background of foreigners which been in the US my self i can see why it would happen, So my question is,

Are those barries/bumps true to Skilled workers from the US or other English speaking countries?

Enrique,

Try to understand that; why would the Caandian employers hire someone with foreign credentials if they can easily find their own ones?

The hardship of the immigrants are always misinterpreted; main problem is the huge imbalance in the job market bet´n the demand and supply. This can happen in any country; not only in Canada. US market is super hot, just imagine all of a sudden US decides to increase the immigration quota 1o times without any demand. What would happen there? Same thing, no US credentials, no job.

If the market is so demanding that after meeting the locals there are still oppurtunities then the employers would care less about the foreign degree holders. Just compare the immigrant unemployment rates bet´n Alberta and Ontario; you´ll see an overnight difference. Why? Simply, Alberta market is much more demanding.

If you want to hear some personal stories then may ask Richard or Wannabe here; they are American and moving into Canada and currently active in job searching.

Enrique,

What do you do for living? Is it a regulated profession?
Which province are you moving to?

That information makes a huge difference in your success as an immigrant.

There are professionS that are in very high demand here and there are some profession where you will have a hard time finding a job. However I don´t see the US being any different.

If you are in the whale hunting business, I don´t think Kansas is the place to be? Do ya?

You will find that every province has its own business industry and depending on your profession, a province may work out or not.

Let us know.

Cheers

Bill

Not really Enrique, I have very limited knowledge about Economics. Though after I faced serious hardship in Canada (particularly with suitable job) despite having good academic background (both US/Caandian degree) I was very curious and did a little research on it.

What I told was my conclussion about it. Other factors of course have some affects in some extent; like you and Bill said. Those can be true for any country.

Thanks for the words anyway.

My current profession is not regulated as in i dont need a labor certification like Architects or Engineers do, As i may have mention before (maybe not) i do Market Research of Alaska airlines, So im assuming I should be able to find a similar occupation in Vancouver (where i intend to go) but i am worried that say Air Canada says to me, "WTF is this? University of WAshington, i cant accept it" you better go back to UBC or something

Enrique:
My husband and I are both US citizens and recent Canadian PRs. We´re trying to find a job before making the move up to Canada, and to be honest, it hasn´t been easy. Granted, we didn´t expect it to be, which is why we are being cautious.

There have been times that we´ve felt like being Americans has cost us opportunities, but only because we are still in the US. I don´t know that it would affect us if we were already living in Canada, although we hear a lot about the elusive "Canadian experience" dilemma (how to get a job in Canada without having already had a job in Canada).

Certainly if you are in a high demand occupation, it shouldn´t be much of a problem, but if you are like most of us, the hardest part seems to be simply getting the chance to get your foot in the door. I think that American universities are well recognized, and since yours isn´t a regulated profession, I can´t imagine you would have a problem with your degree. Granted, local experience is always favorable, obviously, and as Americans we simply can´t offer that.

you likely will need to hold off a little bit. There is a whole new set of rules in the works. No point in applying at the moment until everyone gets some clear answers. New rules will determine specific skills that will get priority.
