Clinton backer: Obama will win
Posted: 04:10 PM ET
Cleaver, a supporter of Clinton, said he´d be stunned if Obama didn´t win.

(CNN) ? A key Hillary Clinton supporter appeared to be a bit off message during a recent interview with a Canadian radio station.

"If I had to make a prediction right now, I´d say Barack Obama is going to be the next president," Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver said in a Canadian public radio interview this weekend. "I will be stunned if he´s not the next president of the United States."

Cleaver, an African-American, endorsed Clinton´s White House bid last year and formally remained aligned with the New York senator even as other black leaders shifted their support to Barack Obama.

But after his district voted for Obama in the February 5 primary, Cleaver did indicate he would consider voting for the Illinois senator at the party´s convention if the delegate count was extremely tight between the two candidates.

In the Canadian radio interview, Cleaver made clear he doesn´t expect Clinton to overtake Obama, comparing his support of the New York Democrat to that of his hometown losing football team.

?Even though I don´t expect the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the Indianapolis Colts, I cheer for the Kansas City Chiefs,? he said.

He also pushed back on the notion Clinton should take her fight for the party´s nomination all the way to the August convention ? though he acknowledged that is not the position he is supposed to take.

"If I do the party line, I´m supposed to say ? and maybe I´ll say, just so if anybody hears it they can say well, ´Cleaver did the party line before he told the truth´ ? we believe that a contest going all the way to the convention is good for America."

But, he added, an actual convention fight would be a ?tragedy of tragedies.?

New Mexico was won by Clinton yet their Governor (super delegate) threw his support behind Obama when he claimed that he thinks the voters response should count????? Clinton won Mass. and Edward Kennedy supports Obama again words mean something! WHAT DO THEY MEAN?

Obama says this NEVER HAPPENED about NAFTA and then finds out what happened, really happened!!!! Whoops

Obama hangs out with a radical pastor and says even though I got married in that Church attended regularly and had my kids all baptized their what the pastor stands for I don´t agree. YET OBAMA ATTENDS REGULARLY....hmmmmmmm WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT HIS DECISION PROCESS?

A man´s word is his word that is something he should be respected for! Maybe that SAYING should be a women´s word actually means something.

GO HILLARY!

Meant thank goodness, not thanks goodness.

Oh yeah? And we´ll have to seriously look at experience in the campaign now. As Hillary had to gnaw through the rope to free herself, and as she then fought off her captors while the helicopters swooped down to pick her up off the airfield. Isn´t is good to support a candidate with such great experience?

Obama and his radical pastor? Oh how horrible. Maybe it´s good to sometimes question how things are, even by one´s one pastor. And who´s to say one has to agree with everything your pastor says? 20 years of attendance at this church, and 5 minutes of one sermon is cause to condemn not only the pastor but Obama himself? Oh c´mon. Reaching for straws.

Where´s that Canadian progressive openness and acceptance of
other points of view?

Richardson proudly stuck with his convictions. The western states mostly went for Obama anyway, so his support is consistent.

progressive openness and acceptance is alive and well and living in Vancouver :)

I am becoming more and more enthused about the idea of a Obama/Richardson ticket.

Sometimes I think Roy likes to pull our chain on U.S. election politics. Maybe western provinces are more on the progressive side, i.e., BC. Alberta might be the conservative stick in the mud, though.

Also agree Richardson would be a good VP choice. But really hoping for Dodd (Conn.), but not sure if a progressive senator from New England would add that much to the ticket, other than great passion and oration.

In extremely unlikely event HC gets it, might join the 20% or so who claim they´ll sit out the general in protest!

I heard a wild one last night. the loser of the democratic nomination getting pissy and running as an independant.

now that would be a very scary scenario. Splitting the democratic vote.

Did you happen to catch the son of Ronald Reagan last night on Larry King. he has offered to run as McCains vp. - after all he has endless international experience by virtue of being with his Dad at some diplomatic events. It was very funny.

Running as independent and splitting the vote would be bad. Ralph Nader seems to have decided to try that this year, although thankfully few are taking him seriously this year.

Yes, saw Michael Reagan on Larry King. Had quite a laugh on his proposal. But that´s the evil Reagan son. The good one is Ron Jr. in my opinion, totally opposite and sees things the way his father never really did.

I´ve seen lots of McCain and some anti-Obama ads here on this forum. Looks like the American right wing thinks this forum is fertile grounds for recruitment!

Hey, wondering when Dion and the Liberals to call for an election? Is it still up to Harper when an election occurs?
Have the impression Liberals don´t feel they´d win, therefore aren´t anxious for one - is that correct? (maybe another thread discussion)

We don´t get any Canadian news down here. Thankfully CBC streams over the internet.

there is 2 scenarios - let Harper govern out the full term and face a fixed date election where Liberals may or may not have a better chance than they do now OR
vote down a budget bill, like the current C-50 with the immigration piece tacked on the end.

Based on recent polls with terrible results coming from Quebec, the liberals are scared to death to be embroiled in an election right now. This means they are holding their noses and voting for legislation that they are promising to change later. (The party has very little money and they are losing support in their traditional fortress areas of Quebec and Ontario.

As much as some don´t like Harper, he is not doing a bad job of running the country and the economy.

Richard if you win a race by a hair or ten lengths you win the race---correct. Not according to Bill Richardson.

Come on putting your spin on let the voters decide and when they decide and you don´t like it you switch sides. Your quote "The western states mostly went for Obama anyway, so his support is consistent". Obama should never excepted Richardson endorsement if he is a man of his word and makes firm decisions!

Then you pick this fine upstanding man of his word as a good pick for "VP" (Richardson) Richard, Richard, Richard like race played no part in that idea! Two ethnics going to help all the ethnics and race played no part in the fact that Hillary has had the Latino vote. Who is playing the race card did Obama promise Richardson the VP position?

Richard never call me a conservative that is real low.

Not pulling your chain just refuse to jump on the band wagon for a candidate with bad associations.

When you attend Mafia events for twenty years, when you attend Hells Angel Parties for twenty years, when you attend pro whaling meetings for twenty years, when all your close friends for the last twenty years are all con artists, when your Pastor is shown to be a racist more then once for the last twenty years and you claim Race is not an issue in a campaign I won´t believe a word you say!

Sharon who said Obama is going to run as an Independent?

actually, they implied that Hillary would not accept walking away after losing the nomination and might run as an independent.

Ethnic has nothing to do with it - I think Richardson´´s foreign policy experience and Obama´s passion would be good for the country.

and wow - I have been called a conservative lots of times!
