Subject: Whats the best visa to apply for?
  Hi All.

I´m a 30 year old UK citizen with a Canadian girlfriend. She recently returned to Vancouver to complete her degree which is going to take 2 to 3 and a half years depending on where she goes. I want to go to Canada and be with her. I´ve looked at the various visa options and am not sure what to apply for. I have an archaeology degree, and reasonable french skills. on the various point calculators i´ve found i score enough to qualify for a skilled workers visa. also there is the possibility of her sponsoring my application. I could really do with some advice as to which visa is most likely to be approved in the short term that will enable us to be together and me to find work in Canada. Any help would be most appreciated, the High commission here doesnt even let you call them so havnt been much help!

thanks

The fastest way of getting here in your situation is to seek sponsorship from your girl friend as a common law partner. But you have to prove your relationship in depth. Skilled worker is the most common kind, however, it is time consuming. If time is not your concern then you may look into skilled worker category and apply. It is time consuming but not complicated like getting a sponsorship as a common law partner.

tough to prove a common law relationship if you are not living together.

are you interested in marrying her- all things considered? that would allow her to sponsor you without a lot of hassle. (bad reason to get married by the way)

there is an option for conjugal where you are living apart but emotionally, and financially operating as a couple. Tough to get approval and I have rarely seen it happen in all the time I have been on this forum.

another idea... see if you can round up a work permit?

Check out if you meet the requirements of a working holiday visa on the UK web site for the Canadian Embassy there. BUMAC

thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

it was looking like sponsorship would get me out there quickest. We´ve got proof of a tenancy agreement when we were living together before she went back but its not for 12 months so i wasnt sure how much use that would be. We dont want to rush into getting married just for the visa.

I´ve looked at the Bunac option but i´ve missed the allocation for this year and will be too old to qualify for next year.

I´m not sure about what the work permit options are. I do well on the points allocation but think i´d struggle to get a job without an interview as most of my experience is from being self employed. Any suggestions on that front would be most appreciated too.

Tom

Good luck Tom,

I would wager you´ll never be allowed in. You´re a white angolphone.
