Hi Sharon - I am a black british born from London UK and have a PR Card. I would like to settle in the West.

I have heard that Vancouver Island is expensive with less blacks on the island?

Pls could you advice me which areas to live. I am also in the Pharmaceutical industry in sales & Marketing.

you must realize that this is no small island ( 285 miles long and 50 miles wide, pop 650K!) and everything arrives there by truck on a ferry so consequently, things tend to be a little more expensive. Housing is less expensive as a general rule.

Vancouver Island is not necessarily in the top 10 Canadian destinations for new immigrants so it tends to be far more vanilla than Vancouver.

I would think Victoria would be your best option. It is a beautiful city, settled by the british and is the most ´proper´ of all our Canadian cities. Climate is mild, gardens flourish and the percentage of retirees is high.

While Vancouver is highly multicultural, the black population is also not that large. However, I can honestly say, to the majority of Vancouverites... colour is of no consequence. I think your job prospects might be better on the mainland as well.

You may also wish to investigate Kelowna. Interior city that is growing rapidly. Situated on a lake it has a wide range of summer and winter sports activities, favourable weather and is less costly to live than Vancouver due to real estate prices. it is also a large enough population base to support your kind of work.

Thanks Sharon - I read that Kelowna is expensive than Vancouver. My wife and I would be coming to Vancouver next month to check areas to rent.

Could we rent a place without references - we can pay a whole years rent if needed?

Which areas are nice to live without the noice of the city?

Are there pharmaceutical firms in vancouver compared to Toronto?

BC is booming. We have the Olympics in 2010 and any rentals in the lower mainland tend to be expensive and hard to find. I happen to live in Richmond which has a very large Asian population but is also a quiet community with lower housing costs compared to Vancouver. I am 35 minutes from downtown Vancouver by car and there is some significant public transit projects underway.

If you only want to spend $1,000 a month on rent for a 2 bedroom condo, you will have a lot of competition and not the greatest selection.

Vancouver is smaller than Toronto so job opportunities will be proportionate. But then again, the population is poportunate and given BC is booming, there may be an advantage in Vancouver.
