Subject: Immigrate from South Africa
I am interested in immigrating to Canada in the next 1-2 years. I am currently employed in Information Technology and would like to know where in Canada is the IT hub. I have a financial degree and would like to finish an MBA before leaving South Africa.

Many thanks in advance.

IT opportunities mostly in Toronto. However, Alberta has rapidly expanding IT needs due to oil and resources growth. If serious, you may want to apply now as it takes a few years to process the application. Average for Pretoria is 41 months.

Hi Neil,

You normally must apply for permanent residency through the local CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) office of your home country. That would be Pretoria in your case. In-Canada applications would mostly be for family sponsorship.

There is alse an immigration path called Provincial Nominee Program in which each province sponsors an applicant based on the skills needed in that province. It is often faster than the federal skilled worker program. IT is in demand in many provinces, and you may want to take a look at that:

http://cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.asp

Others here may want to add their comments and experiences.
Hope this helps.

you could do an ´in canada´ application if you were in the country on a temporary work permit.

I may be wrong, but my reading is that workers in Canada on a temporary work permit still have their applications processed in their home country´s office.

Only the following permanent residence applications are processed In-Canada (via Vegreville):

Humanitarian and Compassionate Cases, Live-in Caregiver, Protected Persons and Convention Refugees, and Spouse or Common-Law Partner Class.

Additional Info.
Applying For Permanent Residency While On A Work Permit:

"Applying for permanent residency while in Canada on a work permit can assist you in a number of ways. Also many of the Provincial Nominee Programs are set up to allow sponsored workers to arrive on an interim work permit while the Permanent Residence application is being processed abroad."

"Also, while not yet in place, the Government of Canada has announced its intentions to establish an In-Canada Economic class that will potentially allow foreign workers and international students in Canada to have their Permanent Residency applications processed while they remain in Canada as temporary residents."

I don´t think so. The new rules are not yet in place for this. Check the CIC website for In-Canada PR eligibility.

if you have lawfully been admitted to Canada for 1 year, you are eligible to apply through Buffalo

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/offices/apply-where.asp

in some instances, the wait may be shorter in the home country but that option is up to the applicant.
