Subject: Landing in Toronto
  Hello!

First of all let me thank for running this forum and providing the latest information on Canadian Immigration.

My PR has been approved and I will be landing on Toronto early morning on the 5th of December. I need some assistance on how long the process takes and if I will have to stay overnight in Toronto for the SIN & Health Insurance application. I have a local address in Canada belonging to a relative to be provided to the authorities for mailing all my documents later. I was going to take a train from Toronto to Montreal in the late evening.

Please advise if I can fulfill all the procedures on the same day after landing in Toronto or do I have to stay overnight? If someone can guide me to the closest HRDC office from Pearson Airport, that would be fabulous.

Looking forward to your help and thanks in anticipation.

Regards,
Anish

Our experience was that we had to wait for these cards.

First, Canada Services would not issue us SIN cards until we were in the computer database, even though we had already landed. This normally takes from a few days to a week or so.

Health insurance is almost always a 3 month wait because of the rules that most provinces have (including Ontario) that new PRs must wait 90 days before applying for health insurance. But you can apply immediately with just your COPR papers. Health card will then arrive in the mail at your Canadian address in about 3 months.

Thanks for your prompt response. I dont mind waiting for the SIN and Health Insurance as long as I can apply for it the same day I land. They can send it to my registered address later.

If you can guide me to the closest HRDC office from Pearson Airport, that will be great. Is the application for SIN and Health Insurance supposed to be submitted in the same office or are they 2 different physical locations?

Thanks again

Anish

2 different offices. SIN card is federal, so you need to find a Canada Services office. Health card is provincial, so find a provincial government office to register for that.

We couldn´t apply for the SIN card the same day we landed because our landing information was not entered into the database yet, as I mentioned earlier. Health card we could same say with COPR document.

Try this link to find a Canada Services office that you want:

Hi guys,
What if you don´t apply for any at that moment and leave the country ? If you want to come back in at a later time, what is the process ? Can you even do that in the first place ?

Just to point out the waiting period for OHIP is 3 Months from the date you become resident in Ontario. if you plan to land and leave again you will not be entitled until 3 months after you come back. They are very Strict in the rules they apply to make sure you are actually living in Ontario. You need to show a rental lease or bank statement or a utility bill.

Raj, you don´t have to apply for any of these benefits when you land. You can defer and do that later after you return to live there permanently. No difference and the process is the same.

It is true you must prove having a Canadian residence when applying for OHIP (Ontario health insurance) as in most other provinces. But you can be absent from Canada for up to 30 days in the first 6 months (even in the first 3 months while waiting for the card).

If you leave Canada without PR card and want to enter without it; then the non-visa waivers need to have a single entry visa in the passport from Canadian consulate.
