YES. Very much possible. Thousands of famiies are there without any car.

In the winter it may be tough, but can get away with that.

You may check ou TTC, Go Train websites.

TTC operates within Toronto city area, Go train serves the suburbs of Toronto.

KK Though I dont live in Toronto I heard that Public transpotation is pretty good.Since Toronto is similar to NYC You will be absolutely fine without a car.I live in BC and I use publi c transpotation all the time.No worries abt the parking or stuck in the traffic. My advise is until you settle well in the city its good to use the public transpotation. good luck

Sribb mentioned a good point. Initially it is a good idea to use just the public transport. Auto is kind a expensive in Canada w.r.to USA, though may be cheaper than Europe.

You should be fine for the daily commuting (work/school/shopping). However, I don´t think in the long run you can enjoy life without a car.

The public transportation system is perfect, affordable and timely.
A one way ticket from say, Scarborough to downtown is $2.75 using both bus and subway.

It will be cheaper to use public transportaion than car, however, if you have to change buses and subways on your way to work, the travelling can take about 1 1/2 hours whereas with your own car it will take less than 30 minutes covering the same distance using the 401 Highway.

Car Insurance can be very high for a newcomer without a G licence, say about $400 per month, depending on the cost/age of the vehicle.

I parked my vehicle at home and use the public transporation whenver I am going downtown Toronto and it only cost me $5.50 return (two trips).
Parking alone downtown is about $8 per hour.So if you spend 4 hours shopping etc. it will cost you approx. $32 for parking alone.
