Technically Canadian citizens and PRs are not allowed to drive a US rental car from the US to Canada. I suppose this is to ensure that the car returns to the US. However, after recently checking with both a rental company and border control, I was informed by both that it is okay as long as I was renting the car using my US drivers licence AND using my US passport to cross the border (rather than crossing as a Canadian PR). We did so successfully and encountered no problems.

Especially if your citizenry is not US, I would definitely recommend checking with border control before attempting to cross in a rental car.

Hope this helps!

Thanks,wananbecanadian for your kind advice,unfortunately
I am not a US Citizen, I will be a newly minted PR of Canada and currently a holder of Singapore Passport. I hate
to drive thru the border, and have border patrol turned me
around for driving in a rented car. Please!!! somebody please advice. Thanks again wannabecanadian. By the way, I
am renting the car in Buffalo and returning in Toronto. As
per Hertz rent a car, it is no problem, My concern, is
Canadian Border Patrol.

Wannabe is right. If you´re a new PR, you may have difficulty entering with a U.S. rental car. Canadian law is clear that PRs and Canadian citizens are not allowed to bring in cars rented in the U.S.

But it also depends on the immigration officer at the border.
If you have a valid reason and can explain why convincingly, it might be allowed.

I would get in writing your arrangement with the rental company in Buffalo, that you are leaving the car in Toronto rather than returning it to the US. From my understanding, this is not an uncommon scenario, and border control has certainly dealt with the situation. After you secure the arrangement in writing, contact border control and explain the situation. If possible, get the officer´s name and have all the information available with your passport/PR card or visa, etc when you cross. If you are landing as well, I would also recommend contacting immigration (which is different than border control) to let them know the situation.

It might seem like a lot of steps, but you definitely don´t want any surprises (especially if you are landing!).

Good luck!
