Subject: US driving licence to Canadian
  Hi

I just learned that getting a driving licence in Canada is a big problem for new drivers, they give G1 which you have to hold for 1 year to be eligible for a test and you can drive only if there is an expereinced driver sitting next to you, now how impractical is this(frustrating)

I am currently in USA, what if i get a new US licence, will they give me straight G2

In ON, if you have at least 2 years of US experience then you´ll be given full G. If less than 2 years, then G2 (you at least can drive alone).

Not sure about other provinces.

Why?

Have less than 2 years?

If this is the case, then you have to spend some money & time to have the G, true.

Still you must consider yourself very lucky w.r.to other foreign license holders. They have to start from the ABC and spend a lot, 500$ may be the min´m, also time. In Canada, passing road test is not easy. Onw of my friend with US DL for some reasons went from the sratch, he was failed twice in the raod test, despite having 3 years of clean record in the US.

I have a question. We have been driving for more than 2 years but in 3 different states in US. So our latest US driving license was issued last year.

If we go to Canada how do we explain that we have been driving for more than 2 years ? Do we have to show photocopies of earlier other state US driving licenses ? and do they really need driving records ? I am referring to Ontario. Thanks

Excatly.

Bring all of your driving records from the respective DMV. They´ll just see the copies whern you go to exchange your US DL for a Canadian one.

Photocopies of other DL are not needed. Just the current original license is required.

You also need the copies of driving record for a better insurance quote; other wise you´ll be slaughtered (will have a surprize any way:).

Thanks DC but I am not sure if you replied my question fully.

Our latest DL was issued less than 2years so how do they know we have been driving for more than 2 years ?

THanks

very Simnple.

As they have your entire driving record in their hand. Isn´t it? When it was first issued...changed...

I did exactly the same thing and got the G directly, my wife didn´t have 2 years at that time, so she waited for few more months to avoid the hassle of G2 to G.

Oh I did not understand that.

So each state has your ENTIRE DRIVING record not just for the state. Ok then I understand that is fine.

So this "driving records" is sort of important ... I need to get that at the DMV before we leave.

THANKS!!

You can even bring them while in Canada by mail (which I did).

You may have to pay some fee. They have different types of record according to your need. Some are free, some have little fee.

If you can´t provide those, insurance will count you as a new born.
