Subject: Teaching in Canada
  Hi there,

I was just wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to obtain a teaching position in Ontario and then subsequently get a work permit. I am a fully qualified British primary school teacher and was hoping to find a way of applying for jobs in schools in Ontario before securing my visa.

Many thanks

Casey

check with the Ontario College of teachers to determine if you qualifications are accepted with out further accreditation.

I doubt that teachers would be a skill shortage situation in Canada - we have declining enrollments.

Without accreditation you have to go the private school route.

Not sure how it would be in Ontario, but I just went through this in BC... I´m from the US, meeting qualifications was EASY... getting a job or an LMO for public school was near impossible but I got private school position, I"m just waiting on my medicals to be put inthe system. I took them 10 weeks ago, teaching positions most often open up in the summer... which is NOT enough time for the medical exam so do that EARLY if you can! cause my job in on the line now!

Thanks for your response. Did you already have a canadian visa before you got your job?

I know of people who graduated with an M. Ed degree who can´t even get a part-time position in our school system. People who are in the system are not retiring and with the elimination of the 65-year-old mandatory retirement requirement, many of our graduates are now heading to the US, Japan and Korea to teach instead.
