  Folks,

I was unable to post this update on my original thread. However, just letting you know that CIC Buffalo did respond to my email within 48 hours. It sounded sort of bureaucratic (no surprises there!) but the bottomline is they want me to take the test. I guess the learning point for all those canadiates who have a query is state your File No. on the "Subject Line" of your email and be precise (and to a certain extent, deferential) with your query.

I want to thank CIC Buffalo for their promptness. I respectfully disagree with their indication to candidates like me to take the IELTS test but I am more than willing to be compliant.

Also, thanks to fellow posters for all their inputs.

Good to hear the follow-up of that story.

May I add something ?

No matter how good is your English, there is one thing to master the language and another thing to pass or make a good mark for a language test (I am a language tutor, I know what I am talking about).

Bottom line: try to prepare for it, especially that you told them you don´t need one so you´d better score well.

CBV333,

When a teacher says something, I better listen!

10-4 to all your points...I have already started scouting Google for some sample tests and material :-)

Hi Sri,

Thanks for your comments. Glad to hear you listened to me!

Yes get some samples test, the trick is to practice the part that is most difficult for you (most people is writing) but do get some practice for the 4 sections of the test and you will be just fine!

:)

IELTS General test is very simple. You can easily score 8 out of 9 in all the sections. Just a weekend preparaion would suffice. No big deal.

Just go for it.

In my personal experience with Immigrants from "non English speaking " countries, their problem lies in conversational English, not their ability to read or write the language.

Understanding what is being said to them is the problem, and they also have problems with being able to respond in detail to questions being asked of them. Not being able to explain their thoughts in spoken words is a big hurdle to overcome. A further problem is the way in which they pronouce words in English. Indians in particular have problems with the letters W and V . A further problem is tying to talk too quickly, and slurring words together.

A perfect example.........The Discovery tv channel has been running a week long series here in Canada, about India, with the hosts shooting a number of hour long shows in various cities in India.

The people being interviewed are all highly educated computer scientists and government officials, talking about India´s high tech sector. The Problem? Their English is so strongly accented that the producers of the show had to put a " captioning line " along the bottom of the screen so the people watching in Canada, can understand what is being said.

They think that they are speaking english, but if a native english speaker, like me can´t understand it , what are they really doing ?

Sri,
You may want to try out your township library for IELTS books. I was able to find some good books with sample tests.

Hey Jim B.

I understand your points on Ws and Vs....I have had those issues with a couple of Americans pointing it out to me. The reason for that is in the scripts of many of our native languages, we use the same letter/alphabet (pronounced "va" or "vaa" depending upon one´s comfort level) to connotate what in English is a separate W and V. So, when we speak, we end up pronouncing Ws and Vs very similarly. Just some background...ever since it was pointed out to me way back in 2001, I have tried to be very careful about it..in fact, I would ask to go to YouTube and check out a conversation between Stewie and Brian of ´Family Guy´ fame, in which Stewie pronounces "Cool Whip" -- he gives that "h" some stress -- extremely funny -- but I have been doing that since 2001, because the teacher who told me about this problem was a southerner -- the way he pronounced "white", "whiskey", etc was almost like "hwhite","hwhiskey", etc. -- just like Stewie says "hwhip". I have emulated that pronunciation since then. At least, it is better than before :-)

You make some valid points -- not exactly digestible for a lot of us from South Asia, but accurate, nonetheless.

SThalore, I shall check my local library out. Thanks again. I don´t want to be arrogant and go unprepared.
