Subject: Skilled worker with MBA from US - IELTS required?!
  Folks,

Just to give you some background....am an Indian citizen...been in the US for almost six years...did my Bachelors in India and obtained an MBA from a US Univ...have worked in the financial services industry as a research analyst for almost four years.

In spite of this background and in spite of providing all kinds of documentation, the folks at Buffalo sent me a letter asking me to give the IELTS or CELPIP tests. I have sent these guys an email tonight asking them to reconsider this.

Have any of you ever emailed them for a waiver and have they agreed to your request? Folks, this is quite astounding....in spite of being a skilled worker with excellent communication abilities in English and having shown them proof of the above, why are they being so dogmatic? I´d really appreciate fellow applicants in similar situations to shed light.

I do not want to waste time, money and energy on some stupid test to prove how good I am, when my background and documentation tells my entire story.

Thanks again.

I know it might be frustating but thats the way it is. People with English as their first language go through the same process. There is no escaping it my friend, is there is one that is tedious. So spend the 140 odd dollars and get the road block out of your way.

A lot depends on the quality of that letter that you wrote to prove your claims of English proficiency. Many have claimed high education and work experience in English but couldn´t write an English letter free from grammar mistakes. A friend of mine sat for the IELTS recently and the hardest part was the writing part.

Sri,
My profile is much like yours, except that I have done my MS in Engineering from US. My AOR date is Feb 11th, 2007 and they have not asked me for IELTS scores so far. I am not sure whether they will ask for it later or not. What is your AOR date?
As Snow25 said, I hope it depends a lot on the letter that the applicant wrote in support and the evidence attached with. I sumbitted all the supporting stuff I could find - right from my secondary school English marks to couple of my patent disclosure writeups.

Follow-up (in reply to: Skilled worker with MBA from US - IELTS required?!)
sthalore,

My AOR date is Aug 17, 2007. I had sent my application package on July 26, 2007. The interesting thins is that I initially got a letter with my file no. and all that good stuff (obviously, I was giddy) but few days later, I received another letter, explaining that I had to prove my language proficiency.

From their perspective, I do understand that they cannot just allow every applicant in but when an applicant has a Masters degree from an accredited US Univ and has been working in the US in a work environment that requires excellent communication, they should have known my case was legit.

AB and Snow25 -- thanks again for your inputs. Let me await for a reply from Buffalo but after scanning all your inputs, I am resigned to give the IELTS, after all.

Hi

I am in a similar case and they did not ask for IELTS. Except that I graduated in the UK perhaps that made a difference I don´t know.

I agree with all posts, it depends a lot on the documents you submitted as a proof of proficiency.

In general it is always best to do what they ask.

Sri,
We have been hearing this on the forum for quite a while and I think its really a random request coming from the CIC.
You should just take the test, no big deal, I took the test but I was never asked for scores, but all I can advice you is that you better schedule the date ASAP as depending on where you live there could be quite a wait before you can take the test.
All the best.

CBV333 and Raj,

Thanks to both of you for your inputs. Yes, after the initial disbelief, I have come to my senses....but will not take any steps in terms of booking for the IELTS till I hear from Buffalo. I shall await their response till Wed evening (it will be three days by then). If I do not hear from them, then the IELTS preparations will get into top-gear.

Just one more query to you all....does anyone have an idea as to what the response time is of the folks at Buffalo CIC? Just curious....

Cheers.

from what I have observed in the last several years is if you claim 16 points for language and english is not the national language... they will want you to verify your proficiency. If you can cope with getting 12 points for language then you may wish to take your chances.

The risk is yours. As for thinking Buffalo will respond in 3 days or change their minds - dream on.

Sri,

I´m sorry to have to remind you that this is about YOU
getting thru THEIR requirements, not the other way around.

Some of the good folks above have rightly stated that it
would be best to do the IELTS test and get this over with.
This will save you a lot of agony and trouble in the long
run.

Besides the above, once you actually get into Canada, pls prepare to be patient! From what I´ve heard and read, it isn´t easy for a newbie to break into the job market.

Perserverance, Sri ! Good luck.
