anywhere but Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver.

For some reason, Toronto becomes the destination of choice for the majority of immigrants either because they have hear the name most often, or they have some sort of family there. It means you are fighting for the same low rents, cheap cars, and public service. The community is already hardened to the new immigrant - too many to help adjust so let them fend for themselves.

It also means that you are walking into a job market where there is endless people with little Canadian work experience, less than great language skills, and a situation that makes one of many similar applicants.

Choose carefully, but find yourself a smaller community.

According to the Canadian constitution; Govt. can´t force anybody to settle in a particular city.

Immigrants are forced to decide their destinations mostly on the basis of job availability. Canada is in general a mega city based country, that´s why most of the new comers chose to settle in Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver. Even out of these mega cities; Toronto can be considered as the epicenter as it is the heart of Ontario which is the economic controller of Canada. That´s why Toronto itself has to digest more than 50,000 new comers each year.

So far I´m not aware of any Govt. active effort to attract the new comers in the smaller cities. Though in my understanding, it should be a major focus of Canadian immigration.

Based on my experience, smaller Canadian communities can be quite lacking in choices and interesting variety. I´m not only talking about limited jobs opportunities, but diversity of activities, culture, and people.

It´s a double-edged sword, IMHO. The smaller cities also
offer greater growth prospects if it all comes together -
but then again that´s a BIG IF!

Who knows where the next Toronto or Vancouver lies within
Canada ? Only time will tell....
