Subject: Canadian Citizenship - Basic Residence Days
We took permanent residence in Canada on 6th June, 2004. We have been absent from the country for family as well as official (tour) reasons for about 160 days.

Question:
1. Can we apply for citizenship now or should we wait for the completion of basic residence days?

In case we apply now, our basic residence days will be completed by the time we are called for citizenship formalities. Will there be a problem in this case?

Thanks
Vineet

Use the citizenship calculator to find out if you have lived in Canada long enough to apply for citizenship.

The residence calculator is for permanent residents applying for citizenship as adults (18 years of age or older).

You can use the calculator to find out if you have lived in Canada long enough to be eligible for citizenship. If you have, the calculator will tell you that you are eligible to apply. If you have not, it will tell you when you will be eligible to apply.

Good luck.

V Anand :

Also remember that AFTER you apply for Canadian citizenship, you will have to wait up to a year, before you are called to be tested and interviewed, and then given a later date to attend the swearing in ceremony, at a Citizenship court.

In other words, it isn´t an automatic process.

So, in the meantime, do some studying, to learn about our system of government, and the history of Canada, and the legal requirements that go along with becoming a citizen of Canada.

Apparently you are still short of about 3 months. So if you apply now they´ll not accept.

The 3 years have to be at leat on the day the recieve your application in hand. Not before even a single day.

A slightly different subject. I was married to an Italian two years ago and our permanent residence is in Halifax. But I work for the United Nations, and we having been living in Cambodia for the last two years while I work for that organization.

Does time severed working for an international organization (OSCE, UN or Diplomatic Service, etc) count towards basic residency for my wife?
