Subject: permanent residence
Hello, my question is about preserving resident status. I was granted permanent residence status recently and we should be getting our PR card sometime around Octuber, which is when I suppose I´ll "oficially" become a permanent resident. I know that one of the requirements in order to keep your PR status is that you must live in Canada for atleast 2 years within a 5 year period. However, prior to receiving my PR status, I have been living in Canada for 4 years already. Do those years count within the 5 year period? Or does it start all over again after I have received my PR card?
Thanks.

Depends on how you define the 5 year period...

The way I inderstand it, to maintain the PR status, the must not be any 5-year period in the timespan between getting the PR and your death that you would not be in Canada for 2 years.

If I am wrong, please correct.

It all starts with the granting of the PR Card to you. (in reply to: permanent residence)
The time period that you spend in Canada, before you actually have the PR card in your hand, does NOT count towards the citizenship process. That process only starts once you have been grnated the PR card, and have it in your possesion.

May I ask what your Immigration status was during that 4 year period ? Were you here in Canada on a student visa, or a working visa? If so, that "visa " status is not counted towards the time period for becoming a citizen of Canada. Sorry.

Stay on student visa or work visa before obtaining PR is counted as half upto a maximum of 1 year for citizenship purposes.
