Subject: Marriage and Immigration
  Hello there,

I am currently a PhD student in UK studying computer science. My fiancee lives in Canada (Ontario) and she is a Canadian citizen. I am planning to meet her in a couple of months in Canada and get married to her. I will have relevant documents such as pictures and video together (that is when I would meet her), and currently have emails showing conversations since last two years, pictures from webcam, other pictures, common friend lists of Canadian citizens who can prove our relationship, etc. This would be the first time that I would be actually meeting her.

I can qualify for the skilled worker visa class, but I am planning to go to Canada earlier than that (it takes at least 3 years for processing that application). I am wondering what are the possibilities of immigration once I get married to her (probably under family class)? She is currently a university student, so how would she sponsor me? In fact I do not want her to sponsor me, since I can show funds and sponsor myself.

I have seen many discussions, and I know what kind of documents would I require, marriage certificate, police and medical clearances, etc. But not sure if I can apply for immigration on my own without my soon to be wife sponsoring me. She is still living with her parents, and her parents are not quite fond of us getting married :)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Max

you have 2 and a bit choices. Either the long route as a skilled worker, or have your wife sponsor you... the shorter route.

If you don´t want her to sponsor you, the only alternative to the long skilled route is to see if you can´t get yourself a work permit or Provincial Nominee status. That would get you into Canada on a temporary basis, and allow you to apply ´in Canada´ on your own merits. In terms of parents and removing all doubts about dubious intent... this is the route I would recommend.

The above suggestion is the only quick route option you have short of family class sponsorship.

If there are no children involve, your wife would not need to show income in order to sponsor you. However, she would be financially responsible for you for 3 years.

Hey,

Thanks a lot for the reply. Just wondering what she would have to do for the sponsorship. To be specific, I am wondering about the signing of sponsorship agreement with the ministry. I am not sure what that exactly means.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Max
