Subject: Driver's License
1> After i have submitted my USA license and obtained Canada license for how long can i drive in USA with canada license ? is canada driver?s license valid for any state in USA ? My plan is to apply for license once i reach USA. I am driving to toronto for my landing formalities for PR.

2> After reading some forum messages i came to know that it is not as simple as submitting ur driver´s history for 2 years and USA dirver´s license to get new one. Are their any forms that needs to be filled ? What are the steps that happen once i reach toronto License office ? Do i get laminated with photo license right away or need to wait for few weeks ? etc .. if anybody can share their experience that would be great specially with Toronto license agency. Is their any website for toronto driver´s license office ?

3> Just wanted to confirm. I got a 1 year visa in october 2006 with validity till October 2007 along with Canada PR paperwork. I was told by my friend that i have 1 year?s time to go to canada to complete PR formalities. I would appreciate if someone could confirm it?

How long you can drive in U.S. with a Canadian license is up to each state. Check the webite of your state´s DMV (department of motor vehicles), where that should be stated.
My state (Illinois) is flexible and allows keeping the Canadian license if there´s any uncertainty as to future return to Canada. Canadian provinces, on the other hand, usually require new residents to exchange to a Canadian license within 60 days without exception.

If you already have a U.S. license, getting a Canadian license is not difficult or complicated at all. Each province is a little different. But basically, you must have an abstact (history) of your driving record from the state where you´re currently licensed. You can get that from your state before you leave. Otherwise it might be accessible from provincial drivers license office if your state participates in electronic data sharing of driving history with Canada. (Illinois does not.)

Take the abstract with you to the provincial drivers license office. There, you´ll surrender your U.S. license, take a vision test, get photographed, and pay a fee. They will then issue you a temporary license until your laminated photo license arrives in the mail. These are the procedures in Ontario.

Yes. The temporary license is just as official as the permanent.
