| Subject: Canada-US TAX |

Dear All
I am trying to educate myself about the TAX system before filing for the Canadian taxes. I immigrated to canada in the middle of last year so I have incomes from both US and Canada. I am hoping that while filing for Canadian tax I will declare the US income and it should be okey with the US government. Please advise me if any of you have been in the same boat. In US I always filed the taxes myself as it was very straight forward. In canada, do you guys recommend me to do it myself or use an accountant? Any recommendation for Toronto area?

I immigrated last year too from the U.S., and I did my own U.S. and Canadian taxes. I declared income in both counties as a partial year resident in both. It really wasnt´t that hard to do the Canadian taxes, especially if you want to save money over a tax preparation specialist.
You can call them and they´ll send you the Tax Package, with all the forms and instructions needed to fill them out and send them in. Better yet, I went online and downloaded the appropriate forms myself.
The key is to do the main 3 parts of the Canadian tax forms: federal, provincial, and GST. In my case I got a small refund. GST is important as you´ll almost always get a refund for doing that.

lazy, yes I filed separate U.S. and Canada returns for 2006.
