Subject: Temprary Working Visa
  Hi,
I am currently living and working in Canada under a working holiday Visa which lasts for 1 year and cannot be extended. To extend my stay I must get a new temporary work visa, which means my work needs to ´sponser´ me. By sponser this means they need to get a ´Labour Market Opinion´ as well as write me a Job offer. It must be shown that a Canadian will not suffer if I am given the job. Calgary at the minute is extremely short of workers, so I dont feel that it will be a problem.
However, I have just found out that it can take for Months to get a Labour Market Opinion?? I need to know if this is true. My current visa expires on May 5. If it takes 4 months, it means im going to have to go home, and I want that, and it also seems stupid for Calgary, as they are in extreme need of workers at the moment. Seems like a lose/lose situation. The other things is that it nowhere states it would take that long. I was told at least a month by somoene at the harry hays building immigration place.

Please let me know how long it should take, and iff possible, someone I can talk to about all this?
Thanks a lot

There are special projects in Alberta and it should only take two weeks.

Thanks a lot for the reply.

Can I ask what you mean when you say special projects? Do you mean they are giving Alberta special treatment because they are short of workers?

Also, if this is the case, should I get my work to submit the LMO in Calgary? As my head office is in Toronto, so its likely theyll submit it over there. Or doesn´t it matter

Ive just called the Alberta immigration place, and the lady told me its a minimum of 12 weeks before anyone even looks at an LMO application..? Is there something you know that she doesn´t?

So what job is it that you can do that a Canadian can´t, even in ´desperate for workers´ AB? There are tons of people moving to Alberta every day so I am curious to know howcome you can get your WHV extended! Besides, we don´t yet know if you qualify for the ´special projects´ that Roy mentioned.

Ah ok.

I´n not ´extending´ my WHV - as that´s not allowed. Im just applying for a temporary working visa. Im a store manager of a Canada wide retail firm - nothing so special that i believe would make me qualify for any ´special projects´. However, My area manager has been posting job offers for store manager at 2 different locations, with not one person applying. In the mall I work at, at least 80% of the stores have now hiring signs (no exaggeration - Sunridge Mall - feel free to check it out. And it is a similar situation all around Calgary. I´m not saying that a Canadian couldnt do my job - but at this point in time, it is very hard to get workers. If you´re not from Calgary, itd be hard to know what its like.
In any case, I like it here, and I like my job, and it would be unfortunate for me (and my 2 friends in the same position) to have to go home, when there is still quite a shortage of workers here.
Thanks for your reply - I hope that clears up a few things?
The Immigration place told me I might be able to apply for a ´grace period´ - so I can still work until the LMO and Visa application is sorted out. I have no idea who I would talk to about this, as Immigration send me to the HRSDC, and they tell me to talk to Immigration!

heya

from what I could see, from here:

http://www1.servicecanada.gc.ca/en/epb/lmd/fw/tempoffers.shtml

Your employer needs to: Submit an HRSDC Foreign Worker Application for a labour market opinion (LMO) to the Service Canada Centre responsible for your area.

which from the link on that site, shows me:
http://www1.servicecanada.gc.ca/en/epb/lmd/fw/listhrcc.shtml

and when you follow the link to the alberta office:
http://www1.servicecanada.gc.ca/en/epb/lmd/fw/hrcc.shtml#alta

it shows a mailing address in edmonton. So thats where i told my employer to send it.
