Subject: I have a job offer in Canada. Worth the trip?
  Hello,

I have been offered a job in New Brunswick as a translator. Proposed yearly wage is 40-45.000 CAN$. This is very little compared with what I make now here in Germany (36.000 Euros, that would be 55.000 CAN$). But I have no idea how much that is in Canadian standarts ?
I would love hear your opinion. Would such a job be worth a new start on you side of the Great Pond?

Thanks for your feedback.

Yours
Sam

Go to www.mls.ca and check out house prices in the city in New Brunswick and Vancouver then make your own assessment.

Yeah, you could definitely get by with that in NB. But are you prepared for the long winter and relative lonliness? It´s not the hub of Canada in terms of liveliness!

In NB, that´s a better than average income, again money is not everything, by making 34000 might be better than making 40k, if they have better benefit which could deduct tax.

Thanks a lot for your insights. I´ll do some more research but I wanted to get some input from others who know better.
I agree money is not everything but leaving everything behind makes you think twice.
As far as weather goes, we got pretty long winters here too (though it probably does not compare) and the area I am in is not the hub of Germany either...:-)
I guess I´ll have to sleep over it. It´s really tempting.

Again thank you. I am very grateful for your remarks.

New Brunswick is beautiful, and the proposed salary should provide comfortably for you. Housing is inexpensive by nearly anyone´s standards. The weather will not be extreme compared to Germany; in fact the Maritimes have far more mild winters compared to many other places in Canada. You didn´t mention where you might go in NB, but the towns there are lovely and peaceful and the general surroundings are perfect if you love the outdoors. There are many Germans living in Nova Scotia (particularly around Bras d´Or), although the two languages of NB are English and French. Good luck with your decision.
