Subject: Is it difficult to get IT jobs?
  Hi,

We are now still waiting for our PR application result and have heard that it is difficult to find a job in Canada. So, we hope to prepare ourselves, if possible, before we go.

We are from Singapore and both of us are degree holders. I am a Software Engineer and my husband is a IT Project Manager. Is it difficult to get a similar job in Canada?

I heard that if you did not study or work in Canada before, they won´t recognize your degree or work experience. Is this true?

I wonder is it possible to secure a job in Canada from Singapore without obtaining the PR or work visa first?

Thanks a lot!

Canadian employers do prefer Canadian education. I do not know the reason why they do so but its true. It is also true that it is difficult to find jobs there if you do not have Canadian education or Canadian experience. However, for IT things are better than other fields. Also, I have seen people being able to get job without any of the two though the jobs were not really high paying. So, in short it depends on your luck and background also.

Why do they give out hundreds of thousands PR visas every year if the businesses don´t want to employ you without Canadian education or experience? It´s highly unlikely foreign immigrant would have either. Jobless immigrants would only make a burden on the country.

I´m currently working in IT on a work permit in the UK and the difficulties imposed on you as a non-EU national are driving me out of here. Without any respect or consideration about your contributions towards the country (skills, taxes, etc) they make everything extremely difficult for you just because of your place of birth.

I applied for Canadian PR few months back but if the Canadians started doing the same as above I don´t need to go all the way to Canada to find that.

When still thinking about it and making enquiries, all the people who emigrated there (that I could ask about) were very satisfied.

Is Anonymous being a bit harsh above?

Darko - Anon is dead on. You will find it extremely hard here as an immigrant, no matter where you are from (I´m British, came here with a first class degree from a redbrick university and worked in a restaurant until I got my foot in the door - 2 years later - and started studying at MSc level). They give out visas to encourage skilled people as Canada needs the population, but it doesn´t correspond with what employers are asking for. If you think it´s hard in the UK, you will have a hell of a harder time here.

Thanks Anon.

That gives another angle to my application/thoughts.

Whether it´s ´hard´ in the UK or not is a relative thing of course (as anywhere else). I am much better than lot of people who came here but still I find the work permit limitations too much and decided to call it quits. The worst in my opinion is that very few companies would consider sponsoring you for the WP even if you perfectly fit what they are after. They seem to rather wait for someone else. Plus all of IT goes trough employment agencies here and in most cases a person needing a WP doesn´t even get suggested to the company by the agency.

The PR Canadian visa was the main thing of interest to me because it would help avoid such situations. You can work where ever you want and do what ever you want. Of course I do not expect easy time and in reality I think any country for ´good living´ is not easy to find yourself in.

I don´t know anyone who immigrated personally but when I was thinking about it I managed to find quite a few friends of friends who went to Canada. Literary all of them had only positive experience. Some even left their own businesses back home and were still satisfied with what they ´found´ in Canada.

I guess it also depends where you´re coming from. Going to Canada from a poor country surely makes difference as compared to from the UK for example.

As long as you have a ´decent´ shot I guess it´s worth it. But that term is subject to personal opinion too. :)

Cheers.

While it´s hard to find a job, but sitting in usa and trying to get a job in canada? things are not that favorable yet, besides you need your PR status and paperwork for being interviewed!!

Heck, even in U.S, no one will hire you if you don´t have a green card or are a citizen here, even in IT. Jobs are there but only for citizens and green card holders. They extract all the taxes and medicare from work-visa holders and kick em out after 6 yrs ignoring what they contributed to the country...

it is beyond any debate that to find a professional level job in Canada for the new immigrants is more closer to impossible. In fact, it is hard even for the born citizens. Simply there are too many applicants and competition is unthinkable. At the end, nepotism plays the greatest role.
Listen this recent conversation among the recent Candain Graduates about job market if have any doubt yet;
http://www.cbc.ca/ottawa/media/audio/ottawamorning/20050407STU.ram

My experience in short; Had US MS +4 years experience, immigrated to Canada. NO response. Then got 2nd Masters from the U of T; same result. Didn´t waste my life anymore, moved to US again.

It is true as Anoymous told that in US even job hunting is tough without local degree, specially without GC. But it is very much possible. But that can´t be compared with Canada.

Canada is a nice country to settle, but not for everyone. I have nothing against it other than immigration process. If I were a high school dropout or technician level professional, probably would like here. Immigration of PR´s has nothing to do with job market. It serves totally different purposes.

Shah, sorry for your tought luck but it´s almost hard to believe you have double master degrees in IT with 4 years experience and still not able to secure a single job? This is probably one of the rare things I´ve heard so far. Job market maybe not good as the U.S but only for folks with no experience aka fresh out of the college graduates. Here you´ve 4 yrs experience kinda surprises me you couldn´t get a job with your double master degrees.

Anon, Sorry, I should´ve clarified that; I´m a Civil Engineer. Not IT professional. I just tried to give an general impression. I understand that IT and Accounting are probably little better than others. But still in general, it is very very tough for all with any background.

I also know many IT professionals doing menial jobs as well...Saw in own eyes some EU./US degree holders assembling computers in celestica.
