Subject: employment difficulty?
  hello all.

my girlfriend and i are from new york and wish to temporarily live and work in montreal. we each only have a high school diploma and some work experience. my question is is it hard to find employment at any small jobs (low wage) being an immigrant looking to be hired on a temporary work visa? do employers generally turn away from hiring in such case?

thank you, any help would be appreciated.

Chris,

It probably all comes down to your area of expertise, work experience, ability to communicate, and the REAL intention work and to look for a job. You aren´t looking for a "dream job", so there should be plenty of opportunities for you too.

My PR friends in Montreal told me that it was fairly difficult to find a job, when you don´t speak French, especially if you look for a job involving any kind of communication with others (yes, the McDonald´s job qualifies too!). They took Government-paid French classes for almost 6 months before they had enough language-related confidence to place calls for jobs. Conversations with neighbors and new Canadian friends helped a lot in delevolping their French language skills.
They also told me that there are just a few people in Montreal that do NOT look like immigrants, so as an immigrant you wouldn´t look out of place at all! :)

The real problem would be if you looked to find a job ahead of you living in Montreal, for sponsoring you for the temporary work visa. Do not expect to find much with your low qualifications and experience. If you have friends in Montreal, then this is a good time to ask for help in this matter, but otherwise.. don´t put much hope in this adventurous idea.

Good Luck!

Uniden

Uniden is dead on. I live in Montreal and if you don´t speak French, forget it. You won´t be able to get a temporary work permit because of the language but also because no offence, but with a high school diploma you just won´t have something to offer that no Canadian can do (this is how you get a temporary work visa - by having skills that make you more employable than a Canadian). You need sought after skills to get a work visa, they won´t give you one just to work in low paid jobs but even then, it´s true that you need to be bilingual or monolingual French even for McDonald´s jobs.

Sorry, but as an immigrant with a Master´s degree from a commonwealth country who didn´t speak French at first I know how it works. Your only way of coming here other than as a visitor would be to study.
