Subject: What do i need to do with US IDs?
  Hi, Guys,

I will move to Canada next month. What should i need to do with my US IDs, such as SSN, driver lic.,?

I still have several months H1B left. Do i need to inform somewhere to terminate my H1B?

Also, what is the best way to ship my packages? Using moving company? UPS? Or rent a car?

Thanks,

You just have to turn in your I-94 card to Canadian Immigration official if cross the border by road, if by air, then to the Airline authority. That´s the record that you left US in time.

Moving depends on your volume. If want to move furniture..and all definitely need U-Haul or a professional mover. For the first time comer as a PR you can import all without any tax.

If have small amount (only few packing boxes), then use USPS or UPS. FedEx and DHL would be more expensive.

..as for the US IDs, keep them as souvenirs. No need to return anything. I have a box full of them, never threw anything away or returned anything.

Good Luck!

Thank you, Shah!

After short landing last year, i went to Canada a month ago for an interview. I do not remeber i gave Airline my I-94. Actually, i could not give it to them because i need it for 30 days revalidation. On my way back to US, i was asked to fill out a new I-94 (Write). So, i think i will give airline the write I-94 card this time.

For my registered stuff when i was landing, if i did not move them this time, can i move later? Actually, my wife will join me from US in three month.

Thanks!

I heard that after a certain time, if no paycheck tax is filed for an foriegn alien, then IRS notifies INS. INS then assume that person is no longer working. Also, sponsoring companies are also supposed to notify INS.

From personal point, submission of I-94 is good enough.

I think you still can bring stuffs later, not 100% sure about that. Uniden may help better.

When you ship your stuffs anyway, with each box, give an inventory; that makes the customs officials life easier.

If you use professional mover, they have their own clearing agents to deal with the customs.

On your first Q on the IDs I can tell you that you will need your U S driver´s licence in Canada. If you have been driving for 3 years or more in the US, you will just surrender that for the Canadian licence without giving any driver´s test etc. so keep it with you for the exchange.

It is always a very good idea to keep all the documentations for any "In case".

US DL is like a must as Dee said. Even less than 3 years old, then you can get the G-1 license withot having any test. You´ll also need to bring your driving record from USA for DL exchange and better insurance rate.

In ON, obtaining DL from the sractch is very tough.
