Subject: cancel permanent residency
Sorry to offend those waiting anxiously for permanent residency, but how, once you have achieved permanent residency, do you cancel/withdraw it? Is a letter to CIC enough, or is there a certain form that must be submitted?

Good luck to those of you waiting patiently for permanent residency. But for me, it did not work out well.

if you have completed the process and landed... my understanding is you just let the 5 years lapse without maintaining the required time in Canada.

sorry it has not worked out.

cancellation (in reply to: cancel permanent residency)
Thanks, Sharon. I have landed and departed. What I want to do is avoid the Canadian claim on a share of my worldwide income. I do not want to pay Canadian tax for the next five years. Is there a way to put the toothpaste back in the tube?

hey, if you wanna avoid tax, why not think some way to make your Canadian PR worth a little bid.
Sell your PR to"American Dad"...

Borden,

Are you still in your first year since your initial landing in Canada as a PR?

You may not need to pay tax in Canada IF you are not a resident of Canada for tax purposes (different than PR for immigration purposes).

You become a resident of Canada for tax purposes when you establish residential ties with Canada, usually on the date you arrive in Canada.

Newcomers who´ve established residential ties with Canada may include:
- protected persons
- people who´ve applied for or received landed immigrant status from Citizenship and Immigration Canada
- people who´ve received approval-in-principle from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, to stay in Canada.

Borden, you may be very interested in this phrase:
If you broke off Canadian residential ties in an earlier year and left Canada, you will become a Canadian resident when you move back to Canada and re-establish your residential ties.
..if you do not return to Canada to re-establish "residential ties" you will likely lose your obligation to pay taxes. You will automatically lose your Canadian PR after not meeting the requirement to have lived in Canada 2 out of 5 years.

What are residential ties?

Residential ties include:
- a home in Canada
- a spouse or common-law partner (see the definition in the General Income Tax and Benefit Guide) and dependants who move to Canada to live with you
- personal property in Canada, such as a car or furniture
- social ties in Canada.

Other ties that may be relevant include:
- a Canadian driver´s licence
- a Canadian bank account or credit cards
- health insurance with a Canadian province or territory.

I hope this helped.

Cancel permanent residency (in reply to: cancel permanent residency)
I also have the same problem. Together with my families (my wife and two boys), we landed as the PR and stayed out of Canada. My son (14 yr old) wants to stay in Canada, do I have to cancel my Canada PR? If I apply for cancellation, will it impact my family members´s PR?

Thanks,
Bill

I have moved from Canada to Spain. I lived in Canada my whole life but now have my residency in Spain. I have no intention of returning to Canada. While I will always be a Canadian Citizen, I wish to trminate my residency to avoid paying taxes in the future. What are the required steps to take to cancel the Canadian Residency?

cancel PR process for my wife (in reply to: cancel permanent residency)
I brought my wife in Canada and I sponsored my wife for PR. I did land and my wife did not land yet but I got her landing visa. Now she does not want to continue with me.
Her passport is with me. How can I cancel her landing visa or PR process?
Please help me to get a solution.
