Subject: landing with car (to be imported later)
  hello everyone,

I will be landing in Canada in January by driving my own car thru Washington to British Columbia. I will spend some time (maybe a month) with my brother there (who is already a Canadian citizen).

Then, I need to drive back to US to finish my business here. Eventually, I will import my car to Canada but not during landing. I am planning to list my car in the list for the goods to follow.

Two questions:

1- Is this OK to drive to Canada, come back to US and import the car at a later time?

2- Is there any time limit that I can use my car in Canada without importing it? My insurance (statefarm) told me that my insurance would be valid in Canada.

Any input is appreciated.

From my experience, it´s ok to import the car later. However you must list the car on your "Goods to Follow" list and submit that list at the time of landing in order to do so. There is no time limit on when the car must then be imported. It is ok to cross theborder with that car at the time of landing. However, they´ll give you a hard time if in the future you attempt to cross with that same car again and you do not intend to import it at that time.

As far as auto insurance, U.S. insurance companies will insure in Canada if you´re just visiting and still have the car registered in the U.S. Once you´ve imported to Canada, it´s a completely different situation. You will more than likely need a new policy (insurance rates are typically 2-3 times higher there, and the rules and laws are different). Most U.S. comapines do not insure there and if they do, they´ll send you to their Canadian subsidiary for a new policy.

Hi Richard,

thanks for the info. One more question:

would you know how long after my first landing I need to complete the importing? Is there any time constraint on that?

Rookie,

Canadian Customs told me there is no time limit on when anything has to be imported (listed on the "Goods to Follow" list) after landing.

that is really cool.

RIV.ca states that there is 6% or 7% GST on the imported cars. How can I know the price on which they will calculate the GST?

Also, I heard that there is an extra $100 tax on the air-conditioned cars. Is this true?

Finally, I don´t have a sales receipt for my car as I bought it from an owner, not a dealer. Would this be a problem?

Thanks a lot.

You´re consusing 2 different import situations.

There is no GST or any other tax on cars imported that are listed on your "Goods to Follow" list. What you see at RIV.ca refers to cars imported otherwise. Lots of Canadians buy cars in the U.S. and then import them - those cars are levied GST and/or PST. The A/C tax is correct also, but again just on cars NOT on your "Goods to Follow list.

You´re supposed to have a sales receipt of some kind. Customs needs to verify that imported cars are not stolen. I´d contact the owner and get something in writing showing sales date, price, and vehicle info.
